Few months ago, a guy tried to sell me a mask for $50 after talking with each other via eBay and he did not know what mold it came from but he recalled that he got it from a mail-order through an ad on Fangoria in 1983. I will admit I was tempted to buy it but decided to let it go. Someone else ended up with it for real cheap. The finishing of the mask looks just like a Don Post Studio finishing but, as all of you know, they didn’t release an official Myers mask until 1985. This mask was originally pulled in flesh color and spray painted white. There’s no stamp at all on the back of the neck, the neck is very short unlike Don Post Studio’s The Mask. I talked with my friend Kaizu about this and he thinks it’s a Don Post The Mask. The eyebrows is a dead giveway that it didn’t come from the original '75 Kirk mold. But, Don Post Studio had made a Myers mask which is a prototype for The Mask in early 80’s from retooled '75 Kirk mold (with eyebrows and eyeholes retooled). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Iavg9XuqOs
What mask is this? I don’t need your critics of the mask because I know it looks AWFUL. I have never seen anything like it and it may be rare.
1984 Don Post Studios original The Mask, released for 1 year in 1985; then re-sculpted in 1985 (common off white version) and released again in 1986 with a picture of the 1984 version in the 1986 catalog with the 1985 re-sculpted (common off white version) only being sold. (Sounds odd, but that’s the gist of it.)
1986 is the first time The Mask is shown in a Don Post Studios catalog.
1984 The Mask was created using the “Shatner” lifecast then modified accordingly.
1984 The Mask is also believed to be the mask that was re-casted to create the mask for Halloween 4.
PS-I have every issue of Fangoria until 2004…what issue is “haroldangel”, eBay seller, talking about? Very quick glances, there are no ads for this mask in 1983. 1985 is the first year of release with the sculpt being done in 1984.
Thanks for the infos, Billy. I was hoping you would chime in & help out. So, what you are saying is that there are 3 different versions of Don Post Studio’s The Mask & this one is the first version? And that it’s the same kind of mask that was used to make a recast for the production of Halloween 4?
Yes, the eBay seller was Haroldangel. That’s what he told me, 1983 Fangoria. If you have 1983 Fangoria issue & don’t see an ad in there then he must be lying or doesn’t remember correctly.
Kenny had some type of proto, I’m not sure what year. I know this one, the one you have and the one I have, was sculpted in 1984 using the 'Shatner" lifecast and tweaked a little and released one year, 1985. They are extremely small and have a weird mouth cut.
DP must have decided that it was too small and had a re-sculpt done in 1985, supposedly using his lifecast, and that became the more commonly known The Mask released in 1986 according to the DPS catalog.
Yes, it is believed this was the mask that was re-casted and enlarged to help make the Myers mask for Halloween 4. The ears match up 100%. Also, this would be why the eyebrows are so high and also the neck extension too; eye cut outs too large and the neck not being too long.
Years do get mixed up, that’s a part of being/getting old.
Actually, I don’t have this mask & now I kick myself for letting this one go.
It makes perfect sense why they used a neck extension in Halloween 4. Thanks for the info!
Also, you said you have one, can you share a picture of it with me? Because it’s hard to see how it looked originally with this one because of the distortion in the face due to the rot.
This makes 3 1985 masks that I know of; these are rare! I’ll tell you what, I will post pics of it soon, but it will probably not be on this board since I’m helping more with another board; keep watching the Halloween Mask Association as we near October and Halloween.
Thanks again, Billy! I don’t really follow HMA as much but when you do post it I would appreciate it if you PM me the link to it so I can check it out.
Sure thing…plan on a full story of “The Mask” from DPS own Don Post, Jr… The article will be the story of “The Mask” and how it became to be “The Mask.”
