Also, the Ultimate sculpt unlike the KHDW is able to do H1 with very little effort in styling and stuffing. So fun to play around with. Equally good H1 or 2 regardless of the paintwork.
Thanks Jason, agreed man. You hear it said, but this is really one of those things that pictures don’t do justice. The sculpt and paint are simply superior (IMO of course). And yes, it transitions from H2 to H1 effortlessly.
You said it man. I’ve tried countless times to get a good picture with my Ipad and I give up. You need a real camera to capture the nuances and paintwork. Looks so much better in person.
There were a few copies that did a great job at it. I was just going off my old #17. Absolute amazing H2 mask but the nose had a bulbous tip that made it hard for me to get a decent H1 likeness. The artsy take that Joe did with his old copy with the painted shadows is still one of my favorites. He had to manipulate some features but it still holds up. Expression on this mask is gold.
I don’t think the Ultimate makes a ‘perfect’ H1 but it can capture many looks. Nostrils are a tad wide as you mentioned for a true H1 but it’s close. H4 cover was the look I was after when purchasing the H1 Ultimate and it is damn close. The shots Ken posted years ago of the Rare mask are still my favorite H2 replica pics. Jon’s KHDW video at the mask convention and Jays Ultimate worn shots are also brilliant.
Love it man! The KHU pulls off the H1 better than the KHDW because it is more sculpted as a Kirk rather than a warlock stretch mask like the KHDW. I love both masks, and I appreciate the history the KHDW brought into the hobby, like the NNM 78. I wonder if dick and Ken still have that Rare mask, it’s a pretty old mask, but damn that’s a good looking mask. Looks like it builds off a strong foundation for the KHDW.
Did Ken used the Rare mold, retooled it to produce the KHDW? Or is the KHDW an entirely new sculpt? Just see so many similarities in both of those masks.
Do you still have your KHDW, and have you ever owned a SLE? What are your thoughts when comparing the KHU to the DW, SLE, and Rare?
Ken made 2 known RARE castings, but most notably the blank “teaching copy”, and Dick’s finished copy. It is said there were only these two, but anyone who has a lick of sense knows that’s probably not the case (speculation).
Dick had sent them to Andrew Stantiago to have them restored/perserved but they were destroyed in the process. I have photos of the process and all that were posted a long time ago, but that is what happened to them! Dick had nothing to do with the destruction.
Gotcha. I just heard about them being destroyed. Didn’t know it was from a failed restoration process. Sad but I think Ken’s other masks are just as good.
If converted by the right person, DPS 98/99 Shatner masks. Have a nice H2 feel to them. This is my DPS 98/99 mask which is arriving in one or two days.
