Don Post's First Myers: 1984 Don Post Studios "The Mask"

You could really see the 78 Kirk in those first 2 shots.
I would definitely agree its from the og Kirk molds if they were still around in 83,84.
A very nice piece of history there!
Nice pick up for sure!

Dave

i think the mask kicks ass but…theres them huge…eyes. :open_mouth: :open_mouth: but good mask

thought it would be cool to add Kenny D’s comparison pic of the H4 Hero and Billy’s copy

I think that mask proves (to me anyway) that the H4 was not derived from an 84 “the mask”. too many differences.

Great post Josh, really great stuff. Such a piece of history right there.

All these posts on the early versions of the 84,85-86 mask makes the mystery deeper.lol
Now I wonder where the H4 eyebrows originate from since they were glued on from what has been said.
The ones on Josh’s copy definetly resemble that of a 75.

A greater mystery, indeed. Or, maybe just something that’s been staring us in the face for all these years. Wouldn’t that be a kick in the head, as they say :drinkers:

So true! Sooo true!lol

Great score bro very unique.i wanna see one of these with Kirk eyes added  Get it sent off to Bry :bulb:

I think you might have been confused like I was. I thought the mask in the comparison picture Kaizu posted was Billy’s '75 before he got it rehaired (before Bryan restored it), I didn’t realize that the mask was actually Billy’s '84 after Kaizu told me. It shows that the H4 Hero’s ear matched up 100 percent with Billy’s '84 like what I was told. Also, I think the mask this thread is about is actually not an '84 but a '75 finished up in a fast method (what had became the traditional The Mask finishing) and sold before the 1984 The Mask mold was sculpt, one of those “prototypes” that slipped through like Kenny D’s copy. Not 100% sure, though.

I don’t think this is a 75 Kirk. It’s too small. I think that it appears to be a reworking or pressing of the 75 Kirk which is what I think the 84s were. Also, the eye cuts are not free handed they were in the sculpt as you can see the outline on parts of the eyes. If they clay pressed a production sized Kirk, sculpted Myers eyes into it then molded it the size would be right on to whay this mask is. However, Only Don or someone who worked at DPS in the 80s would know for sure.

Josh, i didn’t know you had that. Beautiful mask regardless of the eye cuts. Gotta love that line on the right side of the bottom lip.

That’s interesting, Josh. It may not be a '75, it does make sense for it being small compared to a '75 if it was recasted/clay-pressed like you believe. But, however, I still don’t believe that this is an '84. I have seen 3 copies of an '84 so far and yours is different from the others. Your mask is still a gem either way, it’s gotta be made before the '84 mold was sculpt (if yours is not an '84). The picture is from a Don Post Studios Catalog from 1986 which is the first year that The Mask appeared in a catalog, The Mask pictured is an actual '84 (notice the different eyebrows which is the same as Billy’s copy and the one I let go). The weird thing is everyone who ordered The Mask from this particular catalog only received the '85 flesh-colored The Mask and never got an '84 probably due to legal issues which may be why the second version of The Mask was not white. This is why I think '84s were sold “underground” or somehow slipped out of the studios. You are probably right, yours is probably a recast/clay-pressed off an actual '75. I heard that Don Post, Jr. still had a production pull Captain Kirk mask by 1998 which they used to make a laser-scanned '98 Shatner before it was modified but I don’t know if this is true, maybe this particular pull was used to make yours but I’m sure there were more '75s available back then. It’s only what I heard.

OMG that pic you posted of the 84 REALLY looks spot on to the H4 0_0. Way better looking to the H4 than the original mask in this thread. But the original mask in the thread is a very nice mask, the best Myers ive seen ffrom DP

Colby,
Josh’s mask is exactly the same mask that you see in the catalog pic you posted and my mask; exactly the same. These were sold for 1 year and 1 year only.

The eyebrows are different (to me at least). The finishing is exactly the same including the lips-slit, though.

Edit: It would be nice if you could post a picture focusing on your mask’s eyebrows and make a comparison picture with Josh’s mask. Just to be sure. The angles are different so it’s difficult to tell but I honestly think they are different.

I know this is an old thread, but i cant help but ask: Josh, do you still own this mask? I’d love to see some fresh pictures of it. After all, it has been three years.

Just for public info I bought my DP in universal studios in 1983 and it had no Don Post markings whatsoever. None. :open_mouth:

Remember the mold went up on sale on eBay a year back or so, I’ve been wondering who grabbed it.
