DP Masks with "Kirk Hair"

I’m trying to find a DP mask with “Kirk hair” and I was wondering if the DP 77’ Chewbacca had it? It appears to have 2 hair types, one fine on the front and one course undercoat. Is the fine layer the same fiber they used on Kirks for that year? Also, what other DP masks have the Kirk hair fiber? Does anyone have pics of a Myers mask rehaired with DP hair from the 70s? Thanks guys! Can’t wait to read the replies.

Ohhh I hadn’t thought of that, neat.

Please don’t destroy a vintage Don Post mask for a Myers replica… :_(

Well, I have several things to say…

  1. I never stated I was going to, nor would I (unless its literally a pile of latex and some hair)…
  2. The questions about the hair type and about wanting to see a Myers mask haired with vintage DP hair were barely related. I just wanted to know if anyone had done it before.
  3. I have other plans in mind if I do get ahold of one with the same fiber.

No accusations here. However, a few members in the past have taken the hair off of an old Chewbacca or Wolfman to hair a Myers mask. I don’t think this behavior is very fair to the vintage mask community, especially considering they are not the same color. It would be great to have the same fiber available, but to destroy someone’s history or treasure strikes an unethical chord to me.

Accusation may be a stretch I’ll admit, but you can’t deny that it is assumptious (can’t quite think of the word to use) on his part. I never stated that I was going to destroy a vintage mask, like I said. His message (and your agreeing with it) seem to come from a thought that I was planning on buying a vintage mask and taking the hair off of it for a Myers replica. Those members who have done this are definitely wrong, I agree completely. I would never take the hair off any original Don Post (or other vintage) mask, nor I do not have any intentions to. The only time I would deem it acceptable, and do it myself, is if there was nothing left of the original latex, just hair. Like an actual pile of goopy hairy latex lol. Not sure how else to describe it. If I do get ahold of one with the same fibers I don’t plan on removing the hair, but instead restoring, foam filling, and preserving the mask. As for the fibers, they won’t be removed, I have other plans like I said.

My guess would be having the same fibers in hand would make it easier to track down the identical type made today for more accurate mask hairing.

Collectors of any kind of mask can and will do whatever they would like to their own private property that they have spent money on, it’s that simple. It is not disrespectful at all to vintage mask collectors, including myself. It is either laughed upon by collectors who do not like myers or not acknowledged at all. The Kirk Hair is basically a very unique version of mohair per Cathy Tharp. I don’t see what all the fuss is about LOL

But Haven’t they also said it was top wool crepe?

I don’t think that’s correct brother, Cathy & Rob explained the closest fiber to the hair of the 70s is mohair. I have to agree since I own several masks with the actual Kirk fibers on them. An original black latex 77 Chewbacca & an original 77 yeti both with the exact & correct color.

Do you have any photos of the masks you speak of? If so, I’d love to see . Does the hunchback have the same color? There’s one on eBay that appears to be the same color.

I’ll have to find the source, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that somewhere. Josh said Yak Belly hair, Billy stated that DP (Jr, I believe) said wool crepe type, Tharps at one point said a wool crepe type (like I said I’ll find you the source), and now I guess they say mohair is the closest.

Unfortunately the story keeps changing but owning the certain masks with the hair color that is correct it’s evident that mohair is the closest texture to the fiber.

I’ll post them in a sec

It seems so :frowning:. I can’t wait for the photos! Pm incoming

The yeti has the same fiber, lighter color almost identical to the standard mohair you can order from copper moose.

& yes the huncback on eBay has the correct color and hair fiber

Beautiful masks!

Thank you my friend! Sorry about the crappy quality on the yeti he needs some TLC before I do pics with him with the good cam.

Bill Malone, Vice President of DPS and Don Post said Crape Wool was the hair on Kirks.

Well there it is folks Billy has spoken LOL just messing with ya, Just going by what Cathy & Rob have said and comparing masks that have it to current mohair that’s available. Definitely not exact but close.
