Hey guys Im bidding on a St. Nick mask thats weathered so much its almost brown/yellow and I wanted it to look more like h1 and not so worn, i wanted to get it painted but it costs too much, will using regular white spray paint ruin the mask like tommy lee wallace did to the kirk work? The sculpt is awesome and really amazing i just want it to be more white, any thoughts or suggestions would help much needed thank you.
Spray it lightly and you should be fine.Dont over do it.You need to make sure and cover the hair well.I use the cheap shower caps with some masking tape in spots the shower cap does not cover.Just my opinion , Im sure a pro painter like jc could be more helpful…
They sold that latex sray paint by krylon at walmart for awhile .I looked the other day and there was none of any kind on the shelf.I wonder if wal mart stopped carrying it…
while I think Terry did wonderful conversions on Myers masks, especially the hair, the same thing happened with a blank copy of my Fall Stalker 2 mask I had him do for me. that thing yellowed up quick. even when I took it to show Tommy Lee Wallace last year, even he said that everything looked great but that it was a little too yellow. but Terry had a way of making that hair look almost like vintage Kirk hair. anyway, do they not make Plastidip anymore? I used that stuff back in the day to spray paint Myers masks, and it worked great.
Spray paint will not adhere to latex. Don Post told me to use methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), a white pigment and rubber cement…mix it up and apply that to the mask for a pretty authentic look. That is what Don Post Studios used back in 1978 when the people from the Halloween feature came in and needed a mask for the movie.
If any mask start to ‘Yellow’ or get what is called ‘Mask Rust’, its the paints natural sealant breaking down. The best thing to do is to strip the paint from the mask and re-paint. By just repainting over the yellow sealant the original sealant will eventually come back thru again and turn the re-paint yellow.
I’ve had great success with high quality canned spray paint, such as Montana gold brand “Shock white”. Rough up the surface of the mask gently with a damp scouring pad using distilled water. Let dry thourghly. Then use a very light hand to put on very thin coats of the paint. Do not over do and the result is beautiful and authentic.
