H1 Stunt Mask Observation....Who made who

Although the truth will always be “educated speculation”, this is a GREAT thread and one again that brings back that feeling of MM.Net “glory days” of old. THIS is the kind of stuff that all we members need to add to the board whenever possible. Great job (yet again) brother K!

One of tne stunt mask in use during the school scene

Party time in 1978!!! Nick (in white) wearing the hero and John (dark clothes) wearing the school yard scene mask. Just for those who have yet to see some of these.

This thread had the potential to be a really good read. I remember threads that were along these types running 4-5 pages deep a couple years ago.

Now it seems most just want to say “nice mask/nice shots” instead of having an actuall discussion or having something to say about something different then the average thread created daily.

These are the type where people can get involved and share what they think or know, maybe learn something new. A couple of frivolous, shallow dislikes for others makes a possible great thread into a what could have been… Or maybe there is no interest anymore plain and simple. Maybe it’s it at the point where its just “here is my new mask” followed by 10, “looks great”…Page one was good anyway. :drinkers:

My question: is the stunt mask that John is wearing above also from the balcony scene(s)?

I believe so but I could be wrong (that’s the beauty of being uncertain as somebody else knows). I think, Jim Winburn did the actual fall then they cut to, Nick laying on the grass wearing the hero…

They yelled CUT!! And apparently, Nick got up and did a little dance on the grass as he walked out of frame.

You said a mouthful there Benny! Really great thread K… you always come up with the good stuff!

I was under the impression the Hero was used during the Balcony Scene:

Compared to:

And the last one is linked because it’s really big: http://i.imgur.com/u9BZQyl.jpg

Edit: Here’s a, well it’s not really HQ, but it’s the best quality pic I can find of the post production party: http://i.imgur.com/BTVtuhO.jpg

So here’s my thoughts on what happened:
Tommy Lee Wallace created the two masks seen here: the stunt and Hero.

(Not sure about this…) Despite the fact it was a independent feature, they went to Don Post. And someone their made them this mask…

Which is also seen in the after party photo…(middle mask with sideburns)

So, Halloween II comes around. Malone Repaints and Rehairs the Don Post mask to replicate How the hero looked at that time,. Notice the flesh neck and hair.

That’s the most sense I can make anyway

Just found this online:

Looks fanmade, but still… what is it?

Davey thats Adam Greens short of Michael learning to drive. Kane Hodder is Michael there.

Ah, thanks.

Those aren’t the same masks. The HMA picture was supposedly made by Malone but not used in the movie nor even on the set. Malone said he made that to replicate what they had made for the film but had nothing to do with the film.

Ever get just a tad bit angry that the bulk of these older photos are only in black and white?

Oh so much. It’d be incredible to find some of these in color.

Perhaps some nice film resolution shots will be in that book Kim Gottlieb was supposed to do.

Paul no way my brother :frowning: There will always be fans like me who were there in the beginning (not on the site, the movie) or just maybe newby’s that will always be eager to engulf this info that you vets possess.
Please dont give up your contibutions to this site  And that is for all the vets on here. I learn something all the time here and as my colection grows my knowledge does as well. To me this is a brotherhood. Where the hell would we go to discuss this stuff?
Great thread Bro K and please to all that can contribute dont stop. :drinkers:

_After years of reading all of the info I could find on the subject, sadly the only thing I can offer is STILL my “educated opinion” and nothing more.

I believe that TLW did indeed do the first transformation of a Kirk to the Myers mask. Whether or not it ended up being the hero? THAT, I (nor any of us) will never likely know with certainty but I believe he did.

This movie was done on a small budget and without any real expectations so I find it VERY believable that TLW went and bought the Kirk mask and the clown. They were readily available and not too expensive. I think it is also very plausible to believe he would have did this transformation himself. What I DO find odd is WHY exactly there would ever have been a need to have Don Post studios replicate this?

I do understand time was an issue (therefore TLW not having the time to do another conversion possibly) but MONEY was also an issue and I don’t think having DPS do a custom job on some extra masks would have been sensible. Still yet, there are credible people who were around at the time who says it DID happen.

For that reason I think TLW did a mask (likely what ended up being a stunt mask and not the hero), someone (John, TLW, whoever) took the mask to Don Post and asked them to make a few more OR simply explained to DPS what the mask was to look like.

So, Don Post does a few more masks. The masks were received but possibly NOT quite the way John wanted them to look, perhaps they were more like (as K also pointed out) the Malone mask. Due to this TLW may have did some more work to these masks, explaining why there are some similarities between the stunt masks and the hero.

The hero could have been did up by TLW AFTER the stunt masks, by this time he would have been a little better at the conversions. This would explain the nicer eye cuts (he was better at them by now) and what appeared to be a nicer paint up (Don Post would have possibly did the Hero’s paint up and TLW the modifications) as well. So the hero is quite likely a collaboration between TLW and Don Post and not just because it was Don Posts’ 75 Kirk that was used.

IF this is the case they both deserve credit and the old adage “the truth usually lies somewhere in between” (in this case, TLW and Don Post saying they were responsible for the Hero) proves to be true.

^^^^^ Very well put, Benny. Whether it happened or not, I personally would like to believe that TLW did the hero cuts and like the films success, he cut them perfect. The whole “lightning in a bottle” theory. The rest were perhaps done by others of course but I would like to think the hero was TLW. Perhaps the paint flaked right off so IF they contacted DPS, maybe they got some better paint on it, THEN perhaps DPS tried to do a few extra for them. Seeing as they saw the original and knew that was the look, the others were for stunt purposes. Just my opinion. This has been a refreshing and enjoyable thread for sure.

Some theories are going in the wrong direction.lol
Remember what I posted.

People often get mixed up thinking the Malone mask is the one in the wrap up.
It Isn’t.
Malone states he kept that one, the one on the right below. Like I mentioned earlier, the masks sent by Malone would have probably looked like the one he kept.
But I have to agree with the earlier posts by Josh and Paul, that part with DP making back ups for H1 is kinda fuzzy. I hardly doubt they had the budget to commission DP studios for back ups.
