The differences between the Varese release and the re-master are astonishing when played side by side.
Sure, the original Varese CD had a warning on the insert about the extremely low end frequencies, bass and the muddy sound due to an analog recording but this is NOTHING compared to the re-master.
The re-master is all over the board. Piercing loud stingers, un-audible range frequencies, popping sounds in the surround speakers. The re-master is VERY clean sounding but the range is very inconsistent. Over modulation from track to track is VERY noticeable as well. When a dynamic range is maxed, you will get exceeding loud pops and that is consistent in almost every track. I have listened to this in almost every place I could today: car, computer and home theater (Klipsch Synergy Speakers C-2, F-3, F-2 and S-2) and its mind boggling.
Remember, a recording should be pleasing to ones ears not distracting and left wondering if that’s how it’s supposed to sound or getting a headache.
Track 1, Halloween II Theme is all over the board. The highs are extremely high and the lows on the organ, washout the main underline theme. Popping and cracking near the end, dynamic range is maxed.
Track 2, Laurie’s Theme is a headache. Piercing highs.
Track 4, Laurie and Jimmy is potted too high. The top end organ cracks out in the center and surround speakers.
Track 6 , The Shape enters Laurie’s room is a mixture of not being consistent. Too hot or too cold. (Highs and lows)
Track 7, Mrs Alves is way to high on frequencies.
Track 11, The Operating Room is the main problematic track. Listen to this track in surround, popping, hissing and inconsistent levels.
I could go on and on but listen for yourself. Get an original copy and compare, the difference is amazing.
I’m an avid soundtrack collector and am really shocked about the sound on this particular release. I believe someone on Halloweenmovies message board also mention about the sound in-frequencies as well.
