Is Halloween (2018) really a sequel to the original?

Yeah, I agree with everything you stated. It really should just be a new property but it’s crazy that there have been hundreds of imitators since and none have been able to re capture that horrific brilliance of the original. The director of hush said hush was his Halloween. Hush is a great film but it doesn’t come close. I honestly don’t know if we’ll ever see a film to topple it. It’s just filmmaking perfection. Doesn’t happen often.

Exactly man, it will live on in it’s many forms of VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, digital, and even gets shown in theaters each year around Halloween. We will always have the original, and I’m ok with that. Especially the newer remastered versions, it looks like a film that could of been shot today with how beautiful those transfers look on Blu-ray and 4K. It will remain timeless, and that’s all we can ask for.

I think it’s just kind of endemic to the type of story John was telling in the original- it just doesn’t leave room for sequels. In a weird way Scream is more of a spiritual successor to the notion that it could be anyone than any of the sequels really. H40 took the best approach in balancing the lore and to set up future installments at the cost of what made the original actually work.

I do think perhaps there’s some opportunity to balance the iconic status of Michael Myers and the mask while preserving some of that “it could happen to anyone” aspect. Maybe they could go meta in embracing the iconic stature- perhaps they could render Haddonfield as a kind of “true crime location” tourist hotspot where “fans” of the murders. As a tourist spot the residents cold reluctantly embrace it- it’s hardly a pleasant reminder, but at the same time it brings in money. With more people essentially garbed in the same outfit, Michael himself could blend more into the surroundings and again… anybody could be under the mask.

I like that idea of Scream being more of the spiritual successor. Your actually right about that. No, it wasn’t Michael Myers as the killer, but it was young men who no matter what reason they gave, were simply evil at the end of the day. It was always in them long before any “motive or reason”, so it was bound to come out sooner or later. Hell, you even had Halloween playing in the background during the final act, and it fit right in and felt right at home with the context of the movie.

And that brings up another point, I never wanted Scream to have a sequel either. It worked perfectly on its own, and definitively ended. So it has that in common with Halloween as well, they never needed sequels. Sure I enjoy them, but I wouldn’t have been heartbroken without them.

With that said, that would be a great way to bring a fresh take to the world of Haddonfield by having fanatics visit the town, curious of the legend of this mysterious killer who disappeared into the night never to be seen again. Which of course prompts a bunch of loons to roam around in similar masks and costumes, cosplaying if you will, only the problem is that one of them takes the cosplaying to the next level. And maybe we never know who it is. Is it Michael? Is it just a crazed loon reenacting his night of terror? Maybe never answer that to keep the mystery of it alive. It would keep the Shape “the Shape”, without a name, because we are never sure. I like that idea, I can get on board with that. There is definitely potential with that idea.

This statement is gold, but seriously though it’s 2019 and creativity is basically gone and we just watch halloween for the sole purpose of michael myers ain’t it?

I watch horror to root for the villain killing everyone, isn’t that the point of it? having people survive is boring lately

That’s why I watch Friday the 13th… bc the characters are all disposable. That’s not the case with Halloween which is another reason it stands apart from the rest

with H1, 2 and 4, yes, but after that, and RZ’s as we as 2018, everyone is disposable for me

Yep, agreed. I think the rz trailer family is pretty likable though huh? Lol

You said it best brutha!

thanks, I felt that way about infinity war as well, I was shocked to see a villain finally win a fight

Anytime!

I would rather take it as a standalone movie. The only real sequel to the original is Halloween II (1981), IMHO.

Honestly I really don’t see why everyone has so many issues with H40, nobody talked about this series for years before this film came out and now we are going to get 2 more sequels that look to be very promising. I love doing H40 Michael and battle damaged Michael for my looks now, and I have to say recreating the Officer Francis Head was one of the funnest projects I’ve ever done.

Also none of y’all can tell me with a straight face that you didn’t enjoy when Allyson finds Oscar impaled and Michael steps out and John Carpenter’s amazing soundtrack kicks in or the scene when he first puts on the mask after the bathroom massacre.

For those complaining about “missed opportunities”, most of that has already been addressed and you’ll probably see it in Halloween Kills and Ends. They had a lot of ideas that they saved for sequels as they wanted to see how the film did before they put all of their ideas out there.

Now the remake Blumhouse just did of Black Christmas… That was garbage… Absolute garbage, and that’s what H40 could have turned into so there’s a lot of reasons to be happy we got what we got considering how PC culture is seeping its way into horror movies now. I thought because of how H40 turned out that Black Christmas might be the same, boy was I wrong on that one.

Anyway getting off topic, been a long day at work. Long story short, I love how H40 brought some life back into this franchise and I can’t wait to see what they do in the sequels, plus I still have all the old Halloween movies to enjoy and cosplay too! As long as Carpenter keeps doing the score, James keeps being Michael Myers and they keep the plot entertaining I’m pretty much alright with whatever they chose to do with the material.

I didn’t care for Oscar, so his death was actually great, wish Cameron had gotten injured by Myers too, seeing michael pull on the mask was shown in the trailers which ruined it, it works the first time, I really liked most of the score in this film

I thought that whole scene leading up to it with the motion sensor lights was brilliant, I tried it for myself this year and didn’t realize how sensitive those lights actually are which brought a whole new level of yeah this is the same Myers from H1 aspect into the movie for me. Cameron is coming back in some capacity in Kills. The trailer is a something that bothers me about almost every movie that comes out now a days, they basically wrecked every intense scene with the trailer. I liked the score a lot too, I actually still listen to some of it daily, which is really odd because I don’t usually listen to soundtracks  .

The Shape hunts Allyson is what should be the stalking theme for Kills, not for Allyson, but even when you see Myers stalking people, it’s honestly a change I’d like to see, or they blend that style of bass, into the actual theme, it’d be much more terrifying

“Is Halloween (2018) really a sequel to the original?”

Not to me. Halloween II (1981) was.

I con cure with that one, I like the Shape Stalks a lot, but jesus how many remixes can they make of it  . I thought Michael Kills Again would be perfect for his new stalking/killing kind of theme.

I can’t wait to hear what Carpenter comes up with for Kills though, honestly the music has always been my favorite part of the series.

Exactly, I can’t wait for when the score get out
