Is styrofoam safe long term for latex masks?

Ok D heres the famous picture :frowning: I bought this in Universal studios in 1983 This was a DP proto of “The Mask” I know this because there is no 85 stamp on the back, no markings whatsoever. Believe it or not I paid $250 for this guy and @ that time he was in great shape in a glass case. The only time this mask has seen sunlight was getting it out of Universal to the car. I returned home to Vegas and put it on a styrofoam wig head from a wig shop not a beautician which was brand new, my mom bought for the mask. This head had no chemicals whatsoever. Did I powder the thing? No, now remember this thing did not see sunlight, in October Vegas is dark @ night. This mask melted over the years and in this picture shows the replacement I purchased from Ebay which is a 84’. As you can see its in pretty good shapeother than the neck dryness.
Now heres the confusion. Many DP’s have melted and many have not. Could it be that these melted masks were stored on styrofoam heads? I remember in the 80’s being a fanatic of Fangoria, Tom Savini and anything gore related, placing masks on styro heads was the norm…

S*** Don…that mofo had seen better days
I’m just gonna put like 2 or 3 bags over the styro head and tape it underneath. Thanks for the info everyone :sunglasses:

For what its worth…

I’ve got a handful of latex masks that have been on styro heads (no plastic bag) for nearly 20 years and they’re all fine. It is my belief that some of the horror stories we’ve all heard about latex masks melting have come in contact with styro heads that have traces of chemicals on them. Those heads are quite common in beauty salons and the like. It’s impossible to know where a head has been if you buy it second hand.

All my heads came straight from a costume shop and were squeaky clean. I’ve never had one problem using them. That’s a fact.
