I was looking to buy a tots Michael Myers mask repainted but I heard they are very small. The last thing I want to do is spend some money only to have it not fit. I’ve had a Dela Torre mask which had plenty of room and then I’ve had a prop shop mask that was ridiculously tight. Any insight from you guys I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
Well, which one are you considering?
The trick or treat Michael Myers 2018. Sorry about that
The 2018 that I had was about the same size of the Hospital mask. I never tried on the 2018 but the hospital fit pretty good and my head size is 23 1/2 inches I just put in a pre order for another 2018 because I sold my first one in a day for twice as much!!
It’s a size Too. Too small for most people with a normal-sized head. If you’ve got a small head or have a child who wants a Myers mask, the TOTS is perfect.
I have a 24" head, and my 2018 mask fits perfect. Not too snug yet doesn’t wobble around. I have tried countless times to get the fact across that the 2018 masks have two different sizes going around, but to no avail. Those who got the smaller one will just say it’s small and that’s that.
And I am pretty sure a 24" head size is normal to above normal.
The real main problem though, is you don’t know what variation your going to get. So it’s a 50/50 gamble. They aren’t all small, but you just won’t know what you will get, unless you find some in a costume shop and try them on.
I believe the biggest issue that I can assertain is that the height of the head of the mask is “shorter”…
The TOTS kirk for instance:
~12" total height
~10/11" height of the head of the mask from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head
~24.5/25" around the forehead
The H40
~11" total height
~8/9" height of the head of the mask
~24/24.5" around the forehead
My head is ~25" circumference… I usually can make nearly any mask work except most H5’s and the tots h40 for the height issue… I still have several h40s and h5s lol. I just would love love a screen accurate wearable version
(a Ghastly h5 XXL and a commissioned xl H5 with nose appliance kinda fits)
*disclaimer: These are rough top of head figures…
Same here. My 2018 Battle Damaged version fits well & I have a 24" noggin
Interesting take guys. I do appreciate the feedback. Nothing worse than investing money on a good mask only to find out it doesn’t fit
You’re not wrong about the different sizes, but the reason I (and others) mention that it’s too small as a general rule is because it is indeed true. Most of the masks released were too small for most people. The other problem is, as you mention, having access to a few masks to try on. Some people never found these in stores and if they didn’t pre-order, would have to pay tremendous sums on the secondary market to possibly get a mask that would very likely be too small.
This is an easy problem to fix going forward, but Zephro is unwilling to admit he made a mistake in handling how this mask was produced and sold. He’s made it clear he won’t offer a larger size. He’s doing this out of spite for those fans who dared to question him or the way the H18 mask was handled.
Yeah I know man, it can’t be argued that the 2018 release was a messy scenario. And your right, not nearly enough was produced to be able to find them in stores easily. So to try a few on was not possible for many.
I attribute that to Universal though, as they didn’t let production actually start until after April, and then held the mask hostage until after September 1st. That was Universals doing, not TOTS. TOTS had their own issues going on though as well, and the combination of the two made for a messy situation.
Had TOTS been allowed to produce and take preorders the same way they do with any of their other new products, then there may very well have been enough in stores for most folks to try some on. That wouldn’t of fixed the size issues, but at least enough would of went around to at least go to a store and see if one fits or not.
That doesn’t excuse anything, but it’s true that several factors were at play Which created a mess.
I’d consider myself to have a slightly smaller head, and the 2018 was probably as small as it could be without being too tight BUT I wasn’t able to wear my stocking cap or eye blackouts like I usually do, it was too tight.
Some people say they have a regular head and it fit. Another guy said he has a small head and it’s very tight and small. The answers are all over the place unfortunately
That is because of there being two variations of the mask that are two different sizes. They just sell the mask as “one size”, but there are definitely two variations of it. A few people who bought more than one, have verified multiple times that there are size differences going on. Photo verification at that.
I forget who it was that posted a side by side comparison, but you could literally see the size difference just looking at them next to each other.
It’s not that people are giving false claims or bullshitting about their head size or mask size, it’s simply due to there being two different size masks. It’s likely due to either one being derived from Nick’s mold, and one from James’ mold, or if not that, then one of the molds is thicker than the other, resulting in a smaller mask pull.
No one is lying or trying to bullshit about it, it’s just the mask they received was from either the smaller or larger mold. It’s just that simple.
The answer to it all would be for TOTS to maybe try and single out which is which, and then separate them as a smaller and larger version. I don’t know what else beyond that, that could be done. Since they are cast from the movie molds, you can’t really make them any larger or smaller than they already are, without just straight up sculpting a new one from ground up.
Which is why I think Justin decided to sculpt these new H1, H4, and H5 masks from the ground up, after the size issues with the H18. Sure, he most likely used the KNB movie mask for part 5 as his base, but re-sculpting it from the ground up allows for a larger size mask.
Maybe at some point Justin will do a fresh ground up sculpt of the H18 to make a larger size, only time will tell. And since he basically sculpted the movie mask, it would still be just as accurate as long as Nelson comes in and adds the rotting and scratches like he did with the movie mask.
The H18 was rushed out the door under all of Universals restrictions, so they did not have time to take any of that into account in order to get the masks made and shipped out by Universals tight time table. Maybe one day they will work on that, we shall see.
