Shape78, I don’t mean to perhaps seem like I’m trodding on your beloved film and I appreciate that you can see what I said for what it is, an opinion, no more right or wrong than anybody else’s. Thank you for that!
To answer your question, I think the ball was dropped equally by both Rosenthal and Carpenter. JC wrote a massively flawed script, his lack of care in the material couldn’t be more obvious. And as for Rosenthal, I believe this was his first theatrical feature (I could be wrong…!), so his inexperience with the craft of filmmaking just made the film very disjointed and amateur-looking.
I heard a great line once that I believe applies here perfectly…
“You can make a bad movie from a good script, but you can’t make a good movie from a bad script.”
Dude your not trodding at all or whatever , I love to hear your insights on the film… I hate when everyone always agrees on everything tbh lol you keep it real and i like and reepect that . Now i have one other question for you… how do you feel about the other Halloween movies ( not including season of the witch)after H2? I’m curious because how you feel about Halloween II is pretty much how I feel about every Halloween movie not including III , after halloween II including the last one lol
Personally I didn’t like him as The Shape, not a fan of the slow walk and tight mechanical movement. In the original Halloween Michael is like a cat, an apex predator on the hunt, the pouncing/brisk paced Myers is what does it for me. Dick just seems like a robot locked on target, more of a terminator vibe than a deranged lunatic lol.
Maybe I’m the odd duck out, but Halloween was a “one and done” for me. I absolutely love Halloween 1978 and have watched/been collecting for decades, but two never had the same effect on me personally. Halloween III is a good stand alone film though, anything after that I have repressed and don’t want to talk about lol…
For me, 4-8 just seemed to be a landslide, the story and masks got progressively worse with each new film… Then Rob Zombie did his edgy/over the top thing, especially with H2. When the new one came out I got a little excited over the casting and the overall idea of it being a 40 year jump from H1. Ended up waiting until the DVD release before watching it and was glad I spent $15 instead of $1000000 for movie tickets and popcorn
Dude , I promised myself I wasn’t gonna buy into the hyperbole of the last movie, like deep down I knew I wasn’t gonna like it but I forced myself to give it a chance and the whole Carpeneter coming back thing I knew all that was B.S. …meaning just because his name was attached to the film didn’t mean it was gonna be good and I knew that. Carpenter stopped caring about this franchise after he made the 1st movie and like james Cameron did with Terminator right after him, he sold out and collected a check. Csroenetet could give two sh$%s about H40 or any Halloween film made after. Sad but true. I love Carpenter but let’s be honest the man could care less about this franchise now and he sold out for the paycheck. With that being said I knew all that going into the film , still gave it a chance and as soon as the doctor put on the shape mask I was done. The only reason i didn’t walk out right after that was because I was with someone .
I hear people complaining about DW’s robotic Myers, but you have to remember that in H1 Myers had been stabbed in the neck and the eye with a knitting needle, also stabbed with a kitchen knife, shot 6 times, and finally fell of a balcony. This would all kinda slow him down for bit, so DW’s slow robotic Myers was perfect for H2.
Well said brother! I always thought amongst those lines myself. Like I said before I love Nick Castle but I couldn’t envision Halloween II without Dick Warlock.
I agree. It was just an overall bust for me, from the British podcasters to the new Doctor with the laughably fake European accent. The younger actors were underplayed and hard to sympathize for, and the boyfriend who just gets cut out of the story without a send off? The family dynamic is a strange vibe with child protection taking Laurie’s daughter (I assume they went for gritty) The babysitter and the little guy clipping his toe nails was about the most cliche thing to happen in a halloween film lol. What bothered me the most though, was Michael being taken out by a booby trap…
Haluk Bilginer (Dr. Sartain) is not doing a fake accent in the film, that’s his actual english speaking voice just so you are aware. He’s from Turkey and english is not his native language. That’s his natural voice when speaking english.
And Michael obviously wasn’t taken out by a booby trap, considering we still have two more films coming.
I for one enjoy the 2018 film. It has problems, so don’t get me wrong, but compared to the trash that came before it, it’s actually not bad in my opinion. It is not and will NEVER be on the same pedestal as the original Halloween, and quite frankly no sequel ever will. The beauty part about that is that the original film isn’t going anywhere, and will live on forever for the viewing pleasure of generations to come.
Was the 2018 film a good horror movie? In my opinion yes it was, it was a fun romp that felt a lot more enjoyable than the many convoluted sequels before it. Was it a good HALLOWEEN film? I would say mediocre at best. I will definitely take it over most of the other films though. In my personal ranking of the the films it would be at number 5:
Halloween 1978
Halloween 2
Halloween 4
Halloween 3 Season of the Witch
Halloween 2018
Halloween 6
RZ Halloween
Halloween H20
Halloween 5
Halloween Resurrection
RZ Halloween 2
Just my personal subjective list, not looking to change anyone’s mind with my opinion, so no need to attempt to change mine.
One more thing, yeah the Sartain stuff got over the top when he put the mask on, but he was obsessed with Michael. Turns out I am too as a fan, and if Michael was real and he was laying “dead” in front of me, I would probably try it on too…I mean why the hell not right? Again, just an opinion, I know why people find it ridiculous so no need to preach at me.
For continuity reasons I do wish Nick had played the Shape in H2. It’s very obvious that Michael looks quite different from H1 to H2, even though it’s takes place seconds after the first film ends. But having said that, I can’t imagine H2 without Warlock as Myers. His interpretation, while different, is very good and memorable
Oh man Mike I always love reading your posts and this one is another truly great read ! I love your passion my friend and never stop bringing that fire !
Thanks Jeris. You definitely know what your getting when you see me post something that takes up a whole page Sometimes I feel like I am going way overboard with my ultra in depth opinions and theories, but it’s just the passion flowing so I’m glad it’s appreciated and respected.
While I love Nick Castle as Myers, I don’t think I can envision the H2 mask in the film with the castle stretch. I think Warlock did great in H2, and he fit well with the feel of the movie.
If the mask wasn’t yellowed and dirty, then I would prefer Castle in the role. I think it would flow better and feel like the same movie if Nick looked the same in the costume, but since three years passed and the mask yellowed, I think Dick was the right choice for the role.
As for the mask looking more yellowed and dirty in H2, this is because Myers had been wearing it all day in H1. He was hiding behind bushes, hiding behind trees, lurking in the dirty shadows, he got the mask pulled off by Laurie, and then fell of the balcony. All of this would make the mask a little bit more grubber/dirty looking from early on in the day.
