Not sure if itās news but I heard they are based from the original moulds like the Blumhouse trilogy masks. Not sure if itās 100% true but thatās what I heard from a reliable source close to tots.
What makes you say this? It certainly appears to be movie mold IMO. The only thing āoffā is the exposed cut out edge and thatās likely because this was done by hand given there was no separate exposed mold.
The wrinkles on all of the masks seem to be slightly altered in shape, size, or depth. Check the comparisons I made on this post.
The H1 rot mask has the most outright noticeable differences. Thereās missing rot scars on the chin and cheek. The neck line is also different beyond just trimming differences. Even if theyāre from the original molds as Wayne Toth says,
Thereās ALWAYS been alterations Toth has demanded in the past to prevent exact recasting of his sculpt. I wouldnāt doubt the differences Iām seeing are those alterations.
I donāt see any missing scars right off the bat, but that could be because there are no direct side by sides with angle matching etc in those pics? The depth is likely illusion due to more advanced weathering or some detail loss through the molding and casting process at the factory where ToTs has their masks produced.
Im certainly curious to see some more comparisons and see what youāre talking about though!
I know the protos that have been posted, aside from the ones from that webcam shots, have looked closer than any of the ani head retools weāve seen.
I can see the slight difference that you mention, but I will say mass produced tots masks are always going to be a touch off. I personally know the Blumhouse trilogy masks like the back of my hand now, and when comparing the screen used masks to the ones we got from tots there are a good few noticeable differences, the details on some are so faint, the definition in the nose and overall shape, some I have seen are utter trash compared to the real deal but some pulls (Rare) have been amazing almost identical to the screen masks. Itās quality control, they are mass produced so they will never be perfect.
I think the mass produced tots movie moulds are made by recasting a foam filled latex pull from the movie mould. This is how don post studios use to do it, there are still videos on YouTube documenting their process itās a good watch. If this is the case that could explain why some details are not very visible, as the masks will start to become washed out.
Lastly paint! Paint application can make a huge difference in what you see, as Iām sure you know, two of the same mask can have different paint jobs and be night and day.
We can go back and forth about this all day as itās a lot of fun, but overall tots are doing an amazing job bringing the community these amazing masks for affordable prices, I would love it if they gave more care and attention to masks from the screen used moulds, even if they was more expensive with better quality latex and better dwell times but I understand why they donāt. Maybe one day someone with more passion will get the Licenseās.
I find it funny that, when the Zombie Halloween films came out, this board made a separate area for those filmsā¦not to mix in with the other movies. Now, why wasnāt that done with the last 3 movies? What was so different about the Zombie films that there had to be a separation on this board?
I mean, looking at what these last 3 movies gave us versus what Zombie gave usā¦I have to admit liking Zombies more than ever now.
These masks were, for the most part, hated by so many board members just because of the Zombie attachment. As a matter of fact, when Terry Lambert was a member of the mod squad, he gave me my first warning because NECA/Fun World was going after the Zombie Halloween license and that they were trying to aquire the Toth molds for a mask. Sadly, something happened and they released a version of the DPS molds instead. Don Post told me that himself. Terry, being the prick that he is, gave me a warning and told me not to bring up Zombie Halloween masks.
