I read and hear waaaaaay too much these days that anyone that is into anything is a “nerd”and more specifically if we are into Myers we are nerds. Well, I gotta tell ya, I’m not a nerd. LOL. Everyone here and men(sorry girls, if you’re here) need to own what they’re into and not sheepishly say oh I’m a “blah blah blah nerd”. At its best, we are art collectors, at least I am. Some people use frames, we use ourselves, stands, cases etc to display our art and our appreciation of it. It’s all in how it’s appreciated and presented. The thread is open to anyone that wants to share why they are or aren’t a nerd when it comes to this hobby.
Yeah, I hate when people say you’re a nerd just because you happen to be interested in something that they’re not. Having an interest in something does NOT make you a “nerd”, rather, it makes you a fan…BIG difference. A “nerd”, at least in my mind, is someone who is more of a social outcast, I guess you could say. There is no need to be ashamed of the fact that you know all of the intricacies of what you’re passionate about.
I qualify as both
I prefer the term “geek,” but also just call myself a fan. In fact, my handle on my YouTube channel is “The Fan-Man” for that reason. I love all things genre and don’t care what anyone calls me. Most people that have called me a “nerd” over the years are insecure and far less happy than I am.
I’m a geek, I’m not smart enough to be a nerd.
Amen to that!
We are collectors and fans. And whoever talks shit about the community, well… “those who say the most, do the least.”
I remember back when I first started playing video games, I was called a big nerd. Boy has that ever changed. I think Im more of a dork than a nerd lol atleast thats what my wife calls me sometimes. That and goof. Im just a big kid nowadays. Call me what you will, just dont call me late for dinner. Man Im getting old lol Excuse me while I go nerd out on some quantum physics lol
Ahhh don’t take it seriously. Who cares, people only call others names because they wanna feel superior and have nothing useful to do when really their not much different themselves.
Diddo.
When I saw the title of this thread I instantly thought of Homer Simpson shouting “NERRRDDDD”
“People only try to bring you down because they’re already below you”
…and they are probably jealous a good chunk of us have collections of 10+ $400 masks
Most people that have made fun of me for my fandom over the years did not have:
*much, if any, self-esteem or self-worth
*healthy friendships or supportive family
*hobbies or interests outside of work and getting plastered on the weekends
*little or no imagination
I say that without anger, it’s just what I’ve discovered about these people over the years. Others were bullied/picked on themselves for something they used to love and gave up on that to avoid the bullying or to “fit in.” I’d just as soon be dead than not be myself. Life’s too damn short to waste being anybody else and worrying what anyone thinks. It’s lonely at times, as I don’t have any friends outside of a few online in different states who share my passion. I wouldn’t change a thing, though, and I take comfort in enjoying something that’s positive for me and that doesn’t destroy or tear down anything or anyone else.
This. THIS. I love it, thank you for putting my thoughts into words. I’d sooner be a geek/nerd than someone afraid to step away from the norm.
edit
Well that’s good
Well a Nerd is a foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills. I don’t see how that connects to collecting Masks so I would say no, I do not consider myself a nerd. I enjoy collecting Masks and memorabilia from different films (Halloween Being one of them) but I would consider that more a art collector since the masks that are sculpted and painted are a form of art. That’s like saying somebody who gets a lot of tattoos is a “Nerd”. Also I have no problem with social interaction. A sub definition for the word is (a single-minded expert in a particular technical field.) Granted that us fans enjoy more then just collecting masks that rules out that also. I don’t think any of us are nerds just Art collectors lol.

Youre a nerd for posting this. Haha
I consider myself to have a highly addictive personality and once you mix that with a passion for horror mainly focusing on Myer’s and Voorhee’s. These two traits are what ultimately fuels me and is also what is causing my collection to grow and grow. I also don’t have any intentions on stopping anytime soon.

I’m a horror fan. Whatever that means haha.
But I have a lot of hobbies.
