The only thing that has puzzled me to this day is that completely brown stunt hair. Crazy looking how dark it is in what appears to be all the way through.
Stage blood of some kind. The smudge is still there (barely) when it was used for the stunt blood tears mask in H2. It’s also below the proper left eye. Check out the picture below made by Kaizu, included in the guide thread.
Regarding spray paint, I’ve had success in the past. I used spray paint for this conversion and had no issue doing so considering the mask was priced low, but I’d be cautious using it on an expensive mask.
I suspect the (Blood Tears) Stunt Mask is a DPS job, largely because the hair looks replaced, not sprayed. It’s dark right into the roots as far as I can tell:
The spray job doesn’t show obvious signs of having rubbed off in HII like the Hero (granted it’s only on screen for a tiny bit) anywhere. It looks a bit translucent, but evenly so.
Another possibility is that TLW just did a much more thorough spray job on the hair, a more even coat on the white and it just plain didn’t get mishandled as much.
The other stunt mask seen in the schoolyard scene is so shoddy - it has to be a homebrew surely.
The hair color and consistency of spray varies significantly between all three (As far as I can tell. Old photos and different lighting notwithstanding).
Hero has the thickest white, but never seems to ever have had a totally solid white neck. Hair is fairly solid spray, but by HII it’s lighter and has blond strands exposed on the hairline.
Blood Tears has the darkest, most thoroughly brown hair and would appear to have a thinner but more consistent white paint coverage. Eye cuts look great in the Jamie photo, but kinda shit in others.
I’d argue BT has a different ‘face’, more angular. Maybe a different mold or just differences in the pull. Looks pointy even when DIck’s wearing it.
‘Schoolyard’ (from what little photos we have) appears a mess. Streaky hair spray job. Only sprayed white face-on. Eyecuts might be a bit weird, can’t tell. Could be a photographic artifact. A good candidate for ‘the prototype’.

Did DPS employees (intentionally or otherwise) conflate their involvement in HII with Halloween? It’s hard to be sure with what information we currently have.
[EDIT: Revised opinion of Schoolyard. I still think it’s the crappiest conversion]
I’ve spraypainted some latex blank trimmings before. I waited for the paint to cure and it didn’t seem to crack. But the paint did wear off quite easily when I rubbed it.
I’m skeptical about that smudge; it’s not red, but more in tone with the Kirk mask flesh colour. And as for blood, isn’t Halloween 1978 known for its low-budget, and lack of blood?
If the mask suffered trauma during filming, perhaps this is flaked paint, confirming it is indeed spray paint that was used; possible.
I don’t think people have considered, that maybe the mask had daily modifications made, up until the film was done shooting; small details seem to change in the set photos, despite there being 3 or possibly more masks used.
I feel like that smudge is on top of the picture, if that makes sense. Like it was scanned and there was some glue residue on the picture or something.
I thought that too, but what are the odds that that’s right over top of the actual smudge on the mask, and theres a similar orange/pink color smudge on by the corner of the eye, the same places where 2 actual marks exist on the stunt mask during filming the H2 blood tears and after.
However I do admit it could be a smudge from the printer. It’s just out of place? What I want to know is where that mask came from. Who lent it to Jamie for the photo shoot. I contacted the owner of that photo collection to see if any alternate shots of it exist or if he has any pertaining information. We’ll see!
