I’ve really come around to the cinematography and color pallette of this movie after viewing the 4K an unhealthy amount of times. It’s not Cundey level or anything, but it’s a really well shot movie when Michael isn’t close up.
I’ve always thought it was a rather bland looking Halloween film with some solid shots. It just has a very subdued look to it and they handled/shot Michael poorly and made a good mask look bad (part of that was the Powerman 5000 hair). I say bland looking Halloween film because it works if you take away the Halloween aspect of the film (the opening comes closest to feeling like a Halloween film) in so many ways (plot, score, look, characterization). It’s a very late 90’s looking horror film for good or ill and has a lot more in common with say Kiss the Girls in how it looks and feels than a traditional horror look never mind a Halloween film.
I wouldn’t say there’s a bad looking Halloween film (though Ends is the blandest of the lot as Resurrection had some good lighting in its’ night scenes and H:40 and H:20 had some nice framing at times), but there’s a specific “that’s it” I feel they have to have in terms of looks; 1-6 all had that. I think Kills is the closest we’ve had to that sort of “this is what a Halloween film should look like” (too bad the film itself is very flawed), and Rob Zombie’s Halloween was pretty close at times Zombie’s Halloween 2 is fantastic looking, but a real departure visually at times with so many intimate shots (H6 had that as well) shot in 16mm and with a handheld cam look at times (I don’t want to say shaky-cam as it wasn’t that).
the masks in both h4 and h20 paired with the way Michael is portrayed in both, really take me out of each film. it’s a bummer too because both had the makings of faithful sequels.
