I know there is really nothing to defend hereā¦ but a lot of the extra smirk you see is caused by the angle and darker lighting, casting shadows.
If that makes sense. But hey, the smirkier, the kirkier!

The angle/lighting play a large part, but the fact that the original is on a styrofoam head and the HMK is not is the biggest factor here. The foam head widens the face thus making the mouth more āstraight acrossā instead of more beaked and smiling. Most of the originals that are still left out there have the more wide look because they have been foam filled, which causes the same effect. Honestly, the Medleyās Kirk truly is a one of a kind in terms of condition. Those who have seen and held it in person will attest to that.
