TOTS Don Post 1975 is out

Way more detail in the sculpt on the DP Kirk for sure. The paint job is even better. Nice!

Mine looks pretty clean. If its there I’m blind to it.

Would you mind snapping a photo on the new one (from either side)?

So sorry. Thought my response had sent. The first copy I got in DID have those markings on the sideburn area. The second copy (which I stripped the hair off of first) didn’t. Pics incoming

I’m in the process of converting one of these. I wasn’t planning on doing a full strip but I tore the paint while I was trying to remove some excess glue from the sideburns. Most of the paint peeled off really easily after an overnight soak in cold water, a few areas like the ears have been a real pain though.

I like others really wish TOTS would offer blanks to avoid this hassle but I’m guessing the reason they don’t is to throw a bone to the independent mask makers. I imagine if a bunch of cheap blanks hit the market it would really hurt their business.

I do love this mask though, it fits me perfectly.

Agreed! Removing the hair on some masks is an absolute nightmare- it is stuck on there really good, and pulls the stock paint with it. On others, you barely have to pull.

Then some like the H4 Poster mask has strands on the back neck that aren’t really glues in strips but just kind of there, and they suck to try to remove.

I used mineral spirits to try to get the glue once, but it definitely distorted the mask if just a few minutes. Luckily I was able to hide it with hair (and it’s just a personal copy), but I won’t even risk it with chemicals other than lacquer thinner anymore, and that’s just to remove the sealer/gloss

Well, I caved in and bought one.

You think I could remove the hair line and glue residue with just a bit of alcohol and a hair dryer? I don’t wanna use anything too aggressive

I’ve done all my previous masks with the “pull hair down, pull back up” method, but this time I wanna go completely accurate and rehair the thing

EDIT: I’m gonna have to wait a few weeks for this mask to arrive, in the meantime i took the photo above and drew the eyeholes to practice, what do you think?

If you think they’re good, I hope they can serve as a guide to you as well

It a slight improvement but it would have been better had they of put a little more effort into it. It’s 2024. They should have access to the means to make it look like an actual DPS '75. Why is that so hard? Blonde hair, better hair placement, hair that is closer in material to the original, better paint job… is that too much to ask? They shouldn’t have to be re-haired to be converted properly.

It looks more like they are trying to replicate the late 90s goofy looking Kirk. Also, don’t they realize that the hair used on DPS The Mask was not Kirk hair? These TOTS Kirk masks are like weird hybrids of DPS The Mask and the late 90s (cheaper looking) Kirk mask. If you’re going to call it DPS 75 than make it look like a '75.

And on the other side of the coin it is cool to have these options, especially being an old timer like me that lived through the dark years when there were no Kirks/The Shape masks available.

I think they make 'em like this because they expect you to convert them to a Myers mask, so they’re already halfway there in a sense.

I’ve seen one of these converted to an accurate Kirk once and it looked pretty dang believable, with the orange skin color and golden hair.

I think there’d be room to offer a fully prepped kirk as well as this one (Maybe calling it Don Post Conversion Mask or something cheeky) in their catalog.

And there in lies the problem. If they know we will be converting them then make them like the original '75 (more accurate hair, better paint job) so that they look the way it did on screen. Tommy Lee Wallace did not re-hair the mask, he just spray painted it black. The hair on the original mask had a much different texture and hairline placement.

I think the lighter skin tone is just so it takes less coats of white to completely paint the mask white, compared to terracotta orange, and the hair is already brown so you can just recycle it without having to paint it.

Yeah it’s not 100% authentic, but it’s made to be easy to convert, which is fine.

You can go the extra steps of painting the mask orange first and re-hairing with blonde hair if you wanna do a true authentic conversion anyway

My Don Post arrived! I love how small (and thin) it is!

Started converting it straight away!
