Sorry folks, took me longer to get around to this than I planned on. My son was going 1000 miles an hour tonight and did not want to go to bed. So it was a battle lol.
Anyway here we go, your beauty salon tips for the H5 hair. So I used a max hold gel, and a 5x freeze hair spray that I grabbed from Dollar General. I worked in the gel first, and you really have to get under each layer and all through it, just a top layer will not hold this hair in place what so ever.
So after you gel it up, let that sit for a half hour or so. Then after it’s somewhat set, get your brush and gently start teasing out the hair. You have to be gentle so not to actually pull any glued portions up. You have to do this teasing step, or else it will just clump together and look flat and solid.
So after you get it teased, the hair should be able to be set the way you want it due to the gel setting in, and once you get it in position, hit it with your 5x freeze spray. Just keep doing light passes all around, several times until fully coated. Then that should do it. It was a lot of trial and error getting it to a decent look, so you will have to just take it one step at a time until your happy with it.
As you can see in these photos, I did manage to get it looking in the ballpark of a proper look. Again do what works for you, and just don’t get in a hurry with it.
Of course for the more seasoned modder, a rehair will be your best and fastest option. But for those who just want to work with what you got, this worked for me. Hope it helps someone out to achieve a decent look and to keep the hair locked down.
You did an amazing job! The hair looks spot on to the movie. Definitely will be looking up this thread when I get mine in August. For some odd reason I don’t hate this mask like most people do. I appreciate all the different Michael Myers mask in each movie despite their flaws.
Thanks man, and I am exactly the same way brother. They all have their own character, and the H5 is actually one of my favorites. We are in the minority with our opinions of the H5, but I am ok with that!
I just got the H5 in the mail last night. The H5 is definitely smaller than the H6. The H6 fit my head like it was custom made for it. The H5 is too tight to wear for more than 5 minutes. It feels like it was painted on my face when I put it on. So if you have a larger head, beware when purchasing these. I will be selling my H5 soon due to the sizing.

They look great! I was on the fence with the H4 and was considering selling it when it comes in but man do these pics make me change my mind lol.

The H4 is so good it’s actually hard to believe. Omg I got this from TOTS. They nailed it. That H5 doesn’t take a back seat either. It looks phenomenal.

Yeah they both look great! Guess I am keeping the 4 when it comes in lol.
I have stated that the H5 was slightly smaller than the H6, and slightly larger than the H4. So if the H6 is a perfect fit, both of these new masks were going to be tight. The H4 is even smaller yet than the H5, so if anyone can’t fit the H5, then the H4 is out of the question. I am 6’1 with a 24" head, and the H5 is as about as tight as I can tolerate. The H4 is skin tight and doubt I could wear it more than 15 mins at a time.
When someone asked if the sizes were comparable to the Elrod and Hospital masks, I said that’s a spot on comparison. Elrod for H4, Hospital for H5, that is almost exactly how the sizes are on these.
I revised my review at the top of the thread to reflect the sizes better. The Elrod/Hospital comparison is actually the perfect comparison.
I preordered the H4 and H78 but recently had a few more masks come in and ran out of space. I’m just going to make the room for the H4 but I will still sell the H78.
Correct. I’m confirming what you said and that it is smaller. I’ve had other people tell me it fit the same as or similar to the H6. But that is definitely not the case.
Just wondering: does your Halloween 4 mask have slightly black/grey “smudges” on the forehead and cheek like mine? When I first opened the package from Party City I thought they were scrapes- like someone had accidentally dragged it against something. But I noticed the forehead on yours also seems to have some of that same look.
Intentional, by TOTS- I assume? Thanks! Great pics and review!
It took me a while to get around to this, but here we go: A comparison of the Party City batch and TOTS pre-order batch of the H4 and H5.
I have had the pre-order copies for about a week now, but I am just getting around to doing this comparison. I wanted to do this simply due to the delay in the pre-order batch, to see if any drastic changes were made to warrant such a delay.
The H4:
Of course we know the H4 delay was due to the neck extensions not being added to the batch sent to Party City. The hair on my Party City copy is thicker and more coarse, where as the hair on the pre-order copy is not nearly as coarse and lays better. That is only due to the particular camel it was derived from, so that aspect will vary across the board. The neck extension is in fact glued on, which some of us here have discovered as these started coming in. Otherwise, it’s generally the same.
The H5:
This is the one I was really curious about, just because the Party City copy seemed perfectly fine to me. The pre-order copy is a smoother paint finish, where as the Party City copy is a very rough finish. You should be able to see how rough the finish is on that Party City copy in the photos.
Now this may just be something that will vary across all copies, so I don’t see that as a reason for a delay. The mouth on my pre-order copy is more open than my Party City copy, but to be fair, the Party City copy was rather open too. However after it has been on display now for a while and regained it’s shape, the mouth slit isn’t as noticable. I feel like the mouth slit on the pre-order copy won’t be as pronounced either after it also sits on display for a while.
I can tell it’s from being folded in a bag. Luckily these masks get their shape back after sitting properly displayed for a few days.
The hair on both H5 copies is exactly the same, so they didn’t do anything different there either.
So the verdict on the H5 is I see no reason it was delayed. The only thing I could think of is that they shipped the copies that were ready to Party City, and then had to play catch up to get more in stock for the pre-orders. Otherwise, aside from the rough paint finish and the smooth paint finish, everything is still the same.
And that’s not a bad thing, because these masks are incredible for mass produced masks. I’m very happy with how these turned out. TOTS delivered on these this year, they are awesome.
So there you go, for anyone who was curious in any potential differences between the Party City batches released earlier this Summer and the TOTS pre-order batch that recently shipped out, this should clear those questions up. The H4 neck extension is the only real change that I see. The other various things I pointed out here are most likely across the board.
Hopefully that comparison write up helped folks out who were curious if there would be differences between those early versions from Party City versus the pre-order versions.
And I have to say, the more I look at these H5 masks, they are just as spot on as the H4s are. I know H5 is not everyone’s cup of tea, but damn if they didn’t nail that one too.
Here is an edited photo of the H5 and it really captures the look in my opinion. I am very happy with this years TOTS Myers lineup. All 3, the H78, H4 and H5 are awesome. Hard to believe these are mass produced $60 dollar masks. They killed it this year.
