Venting about resellers

My Halloween collection is primary the movies. I collect all of the releases/variants. It angers me so much that other Myers fans will buy large quantities of exclusive items that any fan would want so that they can resell for over double retail price. I know this happens with anything from streetwear to any collectible but it’s bothersome because I’ve found the horror/Myers community to be a great bunch of folks. Most of us want to help each other out.

The point of this post is that I missed the release date for the Best Buy Exclusive 1978 Steelbook and I see them on eBay where the seller has sold numerous copies. Also with that Spirit Halloween exclusive statue thing. I get if that’s your hustle but keep in mind that most people aren’t in a position to pay over 2x retail price right now. Especially with the climate of this country. It’s just greedy and pathetic in my opinion. Why would you need to buy 30 copies? I can justify buying 2 or 3 and if it goes OOP sell it on eBay but not 30.

Sorry for this rant but it really makes me mad. I waited all week to get my hands on it because today is my payday and now I find out it’s sold out through Best Buy but greedy resellers have a full inventory on eBay!

Don’t feel bad about needing to vent. It is totally justified. I don’t think it’s solely Myers fans that are buying multiples for resale and price gouging. I think it’s a lot of people who resell anything that’s popular. But don’t fret, there are a few things you can do. First, you can report any auction or BIN to ebay and list price gouging as the reason. Nothing may happen as a result, but you never know. Secondly, I would suggest subscribing to the emailing lists of any and all places you like to shop that offer exclusives. Personally, I’m subscribed to Trick or Treat Studios, Fright Rags, Spirit Halloween, Hot Topic, Best Buy, and a ton of others. It may be annoying that they email you daily, but when you get that one email that has something you want, it’s worth it. They are all really good at letting you know well ahead of time as to when the exclusive items go up for sale and what time. Thirdly, don’t support any of the resellers. They will argue that it’s perfectly legal, and it’s all about supply and demand, but as we all know, they are not the original suppliers, therefore the demand doesn’t stem from them supplying anything other than overpriced swag that was never meant to be sold for those amounts in the first place. I will admit that as bad as they are, the people who buy from them are really to blame. As long as there are people who A) don’t care, B) will buy anything and money isn’t their concern, or C) are ignorant to the fact as to what they are doing, then the resellers will always use whatever reason to justify their actions, despite how unfair it seems to people like you and me. Resellers essentially discourage people that want to collect for fun. You are not alone in your hate for them. They are detestable.

I feel.you, man. However, It’s a business for many. Some people have always been doing this type of shit. The companies shouldn’t have so many limited edition items. They know better.

I go back to a movie quote that fits this perfectly.

“I know it’s a rotten game, but it’s the only one the man left us to play, and that’s the stone cold truth”…

The other thing these companies can do is have additional manufacturing runs if enough people demand it. That would fix a lot of this.

I appreciate your reply! I was thinking also with exclusive/limited run items there should be a 1-2 unit per person rule set in place by the company and enforced by the retailer. Like how supermarkets handled the toilet paper fiasco haha. Also i’ve seen record stores do that with record store day exclusive items

It happens all the time with blu-rays which is why many places only allow one buyer to purchase only a few copies of a limited movie.

Isn’t it pointless to buy the same movie again just cause of a steelbook? They need to include stuff which has never been seen before at this rate, like on set footageof Castle walking on set in and out of the mask

No problem. I can feel and empathize with your frustration. When I miss out on things, I just wait for the next cool thing to come along, or wait until a long enough period goes by where there is no hype around that item anymore and the price goes down.

Depends on the collector. Some people want all the editions. If there weren’t people that double dip each time, then the companies wouldn’t put a new one out every year.

True, and yet that is likely the main reason for companies limiting them too.

Maybe so.

Totally agree with what you’re saying. I collect Scream Factory horror blur-ays, and some people on Ebay are asking $60 just for the damn slipcover…shocking.

It’s funny, when I preordered my steel copy, it never even crossed my mind to do this. I don’t know why these people need the greed. Just wait until you can get it retail price. It’s nice, but it’s the same movie I (now have5 copies of)…and I gave one away!
