Well Nik found the real Kirk hair fiber so it’s obviously still out there. I haven’t even asked him what it is because I know it took him ordering TONS of fiber samples before he found the right one. I’ve shared where I got my special mohair from with JC, along with everything I knew about painting and hairing. Now no one wants a hairjob or paintjob from me. It’s not like I really care now cuz I’m semi retired from maskmaking, but that’s why it’s not good to share secrets, even to as nice a guy and as good a friend as JC is.
Honestly Chad, I don’t use ANYTHING that you secretly told me! Nothing man! But I do appreciate you thinking enough of me to tell me, seriously! I learned everything from sign making to mask making by trial and error. You guys can find out anything you need to know about hairing and mask painting by searching Google! I have used paint guns and airbrushes in our sign business since the late 80s. I have an edge I guess you could say because of my past painting experience. As for hair guys… search ebay for mohair or coppermoose and learn how to dye it, again by searching the WWW! Not rocket science, just a passion to please and satisfy your own vision.
Well Chad, I did use one thing you told me! You said that I should learn how to hair a mask so I could do everyhting myself on a conversion and I did. Thats it man, lots of practice. I rehaired about 6 or 7 2003 DPs back in the day and had the basics down. So please don’t beat yourself up about sharing anything with me because again, I honestly don’t use or remember the details that you told me man.
Now, I will share anything that I know with you guys but I can’t say that this mask making is all for fun! Yes it’s a hobby, but when I am away from my wife and kids all night because I am doing mask work… you better know it’s about the money! I’d be a fool to work all day, come in and go to my shop and start doing hobby work all night just for the fun of it! I love the mask work, replica work and all the other custom work I do but I love my family more. It’s not a bad thing for this work to be “about the money” as long as you love it and have a passion to satisfy!
That’s the most typing I’ve done in months
