My biggest criticisms of the TOTS Kirk is how stiff the latex is (a constant for all TOTS masks), and that the blond hair was changed to the same flat brown camel hair used in the H2 masks. It’s not a BAD mask, and given a little TLC, it can really shine.
What they really need to do if find someone who has a original 75 mask in good condition and copy the exact fucking thing so we wouldn’t have a problem but it’s always something.
Yeah you’re right but even being medium thickness it had stretch like no other mask today. Except that dead ringer or whatever it’s called. That’s from all the clay in the latex right? Looks like it got pretty thin when stretched. It definitely holds it shape (pun intended) well though…. Probably due to that medium thickness. I feel so ridiculous talking about this stuff sometimes but it really just was lightning in a bottle.
That’s a common misconception. Cathy Tharp told me that clay was only added to the Don Post 800 line in the late 60s and early 70s and was intended for the opposite effect - to make the masks stiff and hold their shape. This makes sense because latex is naturally incredibly stretchy and clay is a stiff material. This would have allowed them to use significantly less latex, not only because of the clay filler, but also because the stiffness would allow them to make thinner pulls.
She also told me that she thinks the reason clay is often thought of as enhancing the elasticity is because it causes the masks the break down faster. (Anyone who has watched one of their masks rot knows parts of it get really stiff and parts of it get really soft and stretchy.)
Very interesting!!! I guess it was just the type of latex used that made it so stretchy then. I had a rubies that was super stretchy but it was also ridiculously thin
