1978 hero and paint rubbing off

This thread is about the hero and other two masks used in Original. We all know how they were painted and how over the course of filming paint rubbed off and mask became dirty. Well fast forward to Halloween 2 filming and mask is diirtier and stuff has faded. Anyway it’s said this happened due to the way it was painted , handled and storage. My question is, why didn’t the paint crack or chip? It’s always said on here not to just spray paint a mask because it will chip or crack. Wouldn’t the mask have shown cracks all over instead of the way the paint faded or rubbed off?

Paint was different back in the 70’s compared to now, plus the mask was dirtier in H2 from Warlock taking it off by the most and the eyecuts, he would grab the hair first and the black rubbed onto the mask

Spray paint today is not the same spray paint made in the 70s. Spray paint in the 70s was lower quality, didn’t coat as solidly, and rubbed away easily. It was also metal based. Spray paint today is usually acrylic based, coats more evenly, and doesn’t rub away as easily. It’s the acrylic that causes the paint to crack.

Okay that explains it

I don’t believe the hero mask, or stunt masks, were every painted completely white. I think the intention was only to spray the face, and some overspray hit the neck.

The wear pattern on the Hero doesn’t seem to dramatically change once the neck is obviously worn down. So I think the neck was thinner to begin with, and paint rubbed off during H1, but not much more after that.

The stunt masks didn’t seem to lose much paint at all. One had a lot of flesh to begin with. The other just got dirtier.

IIRC the Hero had couple of tiny cracks around the eyes by HII. Could be just from pulling the mask by the eye sockets.

It would also be from all the times Warlock and Castle had worn the mask, at least in my opinion

I’d swear under oath that many years ago I heard TLW say that he spray painted the mask but it constantly needed touched up so he used white clown makeup and sponged it on before scenes were shot
