2005 Psycho Questions.

Hey, everyone.

I hope you’re all enjoying the change of season!

If you’re on the facebook group you may have seen the '05 Psycho for sale that looks… how shall I say it… rough.

From what the owner can gather, it’s been reworked at least 3 times since Justin made it. There are a couple of signatures inside the mask in addition to Justin’s. It’s a shame. The good news is I think all of the alterations were superficial. The eye cuts look unaltered.

The current owner picked it up about a year ago at a local record store that had a decent-sized Horror selection. He was thrilled to have found it sitting there.

Anyway, I bought it from him.

I see this mask as a potential piece. I’ve seen what a really good '05 Psycho can achieve (looking at you, Rody and KKF) and I think this mask can be great. In my mind, this is an '05 blank from Mabry’s shop. This mask needs a professional finish.

HOWEVER…

I’m concerned whether or not it IS, in fact, an '05 Psycho. I don’t think the make or model is in question, it looks like an NO Psycho to me, but I guess it wouldn’t surprise me to find out Justin’s signature had been altered or forged, given the unscrupulous nature of some of the people in this hobby. To be clear: I’m not saying the person I bought the mask from would have done something like this, it’s just an old mask that’s been passed around a lot… the opportunities for someone to have done something like this would have been numerous.

I don’t know the nuances of most masks, let alone masks that were en vogue almost 20 years ago, so I can’t judge the mask’s manufacture date based solely on physical characteristics. I had to study Justin’s signature and determine whether or not it looked authentic.

From what I’ve seen of Justin’s signature, he usually signs in neat handwriting. The signature on this mask is pretty haphazard and sloppy. There are a few notable tendencies in his signature that ARE present in the signature on the mask, which is why I decided to purchase it.

I reached out to Justin yesterday to see if he could take a look, but I don’t expect a response. I imagine he has much better things to do with his time than confirm or disprove the legitimacy of a mask he made almost two decades ago.

So, I’m going to post a few pictures I took from the facebook advertisement (I won’t have the mask in my possession until next week) and ask the community to tell me what they think of it. Does it appear to be an authentic '05 Psycho from what you all can gather?

I’d like to feel more confident in knowing the origin of the mask before I pay an artist to bring this mask back to life. I’m pretty sure this is a really old Psycho, and that’s cool, but I bought it in hopes of having an early run '05 (widely considered a favorite among collectors) and a really special piece of the hobby’s history. If it’s not an '05, I’m not sure I want to sink any more money into it… at least not right now.

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks, guys.

Best,
HEDGE

Hey! Thanks for the shout out! :raised_hands: I appreciate it!
Yes, it’s a legit 05 Psycho, I can tell by the latex it’s made out that it is a real deal. Definitely been redone, but it could look amazing with a rehaul!

Really?! Oh that’s awesome to hear. Thanks for the comment.

I was curious about the color of the inside of the mask. I read somewhere Justin used “black” latex on one of the '05 Psychos JC redid. I didn’t know if this mask is considered “black” latex… it just looks… dirty?

Was this latex only used on the '05s?

Hi!

Thanks for pointing me out haha, Im curious what Psycho that I used to own are you referring to?

That is indeed a genuine 2005 Psycho, latex color as well as the Signature, which I’m honestly thrilled to see that it is intact and not faded or appeared to be smudged, is a great thing!

The latex Justin uses is often a skin colored latex. he rarely uses black latex. This means that your copy that you snagged is extra special and rare, and that black latex psychos are uncommon, but the fact yours is also a 2005 makes it even more rare.

I would give that psycho a overhaul, definitely send it to a great artist and they will have it fixed up! You will be amazed how amazing the pscyho is, one of the best myers ever!

The latex is definitely not dirty, it is just the latex color.

My first legit myers mask is a 2005 Psycho, to this day I think that is one of the best pieces I ever owned. I also think the psychos is the best mask for the closet scene, and that opinion is still the same! You got a great score buddy, congrats!

My first myers mask, the 2005 Psycho!

Here is a 2005 Psycho done up by Rowland Kelly from Death Row Masks. Used to own this one for a while, an amazing paint-up, eye cuts, and hair! Highly recommend Rowland to fix your Psycho!

I had one as well. the latex is unbelievable on them if you’re not used to it. it holds up well and if even marginally well taken care of they present very nicely all these years later.

Hey, Rod!

Thanks for the write-up.

I was referring to your JC and RK Psychos. While looking for photos to compare the Psycho I bought to others that folks have posted in the forum, I came across yours. Both are really awesome to look at. JC is JC… the man is a magician and that Psycho is incredible. I can’t believe you BEGAN your collection with that piece. Lol. However, the RK Psycho has me floored. I don’t think I’ve seen a Psycho look closer to 1978 than the one you owned. I’m REALLY impressed by it.

That’s awesome to hear. I was concerned by the age of the mask. I don’t know much about the rotting tendencies of latex so I don’t know what to expect when I get this mask. It looks pliable from the photos, but I was kind of worried it might be brittle in spots, or smell 20 years old… lol… as stupid as that sounds. I like to wear these masks and I’m just hoping that this thing doesn’t smell like it’s been in and out of smokey garages for 2 decades.

I’m stoked to own an '05 Psycho.

UPDATE:

The mask arrived earlier today (USPS has been on point lately) and I’m absolutely thrilled. The mask is in dire need of a professional makeover, but it is in GREAT shape for being almost 20 years old. The latex is, in fact, black as we suspected (it’s actually kind of a swirly charcoal-green), and is super soft and pliable. Everything is structurally sound!

I put it on immediately and took a few photos. I couldn’t help myself.

I see SO MUCH potential with this mask. I’ve provided unedited photos as well as a few with edits that help display the detail hidden beneath the… uh… rough finish.

Super stoked to own an '05 Psycho!

Now… who to get it finished by… hmmm…

Congrats Hedge! That looks great on you man. I can just imagine what the future holds for that one:beers::+1::trophy:

Thank you, Jay! You’re the man! :myers:

Great pick up. When it comes to the 05 ones, there are also different molds. I have 4 or 5 of them and my favorite mold has the Psycho stamp on the back.

Thanks, CBK!

Yeah, this one doesn’t have a stamp, unless it’s buried under the hair.

Is there anyway to know which run of molds this one came from? It would be super cool to place its manufacture date in terms of when in '05 Justin made it. Does the black latex give any idea?

Or his signature?

I found it interesting that he wrote “The Psycho” instead of the more common “Psycho”. It makes me want to believe that this was a very early version and eventually he dropped “the” and just started labeling them “Psycho”. That’s COMPLETE conjecture… I have no idea of the facts… but it makes sense to me.

Justin also did the same thing with the signature for my 2005 Psycho by JC. However, I do not think “The” is a word that Justin only puts on the 2005 Psychos.

Not sure about looking at the latex itself, it’s really hard to tell which specific manufacturer date.

Hmm. Maybe there’s no way of knowing. Bummer.

Atleast you know it’s a genuine 2005 Psycho! It’s really amazing how Justin’s signature is still clear as day, even after nearly 20 years!

Congrats man! It will look great once it gets finished!

I have earlier run copies that are signed “Psycho” and “The Psycho” I guess it was just how he was feeling at the time in signed each one. It being refinished doesn’t help either…Sometimes you can tell by the Glue lines on them, It seems when it first came out Justin was applying them like this.

Don’t know if that helps any

Thanks for educating me on the Pyshco, guys. This mask is awesome. It’s crazy how popular this mask still is after all these years. It feels great to own a piece of Myers lore.
