While many cite the coveralls used by Don Shanks in Halloween 5 as grey Herringbone Big Mac coveralls, I severely doubt this. After looking at screen caps and re-watching the film, I’ve concluded that they may be actually be SEARS or Roebucks coveralls instead. Why do I think this? A couple reasons actually, one being that the right coverall pocket in Halloween 5 was in fact squared off as can be clearly seen in certain scenes in the film and screen caps.
As can be seen in this picture, the coveralls Michael is wearing have squared off pockets, while some vintage Big mac coveralls did in fact have squared off pockets, most were rounded, especially in the late 80’s when H5 was made.
The second reasoning behind my assumption that the H5 coveralls were grey herringbone SEARS/Roebucks are due to the coveralls in H5 not having the collar button that was standard to all Big Mac coveralls up until they were discontinued in 2009. This leads me to believe that the coveralls had snaps like in H2, and if you look closely at the photo above you can see it had no button even though it is obscured by the dark.
While these may as well not be the same coveralls as the ones Shanks used, the coveralls used by the prankster in the scene where Tina pranks the cops clearly do not have a button hole and do have the same square pocket, while they appear navy blue to spruce green in this scene, that may also be due to lighting. Due to the mask being the same as the one Shanks uses, I am under the belief the crew probably picked out the same coveralls as well.
Both of these details match up exactly with the SEARS/Roebucks coveralls, which were much more available in the 80’s then Big Mac coveralls anyway. The H5 coveralls also had no seam up the back either, ruling out the standard 80’s Big Mac coveralls, which usually had seams up the back.
I do hope you enjoyed this little thread, I felt like I needed to add some discussion since the forums been pretty inactive these days, feel free to add your thoughts or objections below, and YES Roebucks and Sears coveralls were available in grey and in herringbone as well, I think there is a listing for what I believe to be the exact H5 coveralls on Ebay right now in fact, and if not I have seen them listed before.
