What color is the flesh tone and hair supposed to be on the original mask? I can’t decide if the flesh tone is supposed to be pink or normal, or if the hair is supposed to be black or dark brown. It’s probably due to the lighting, but I would like to know what the real color for the flesh tones and hair is.
its more like a trump orange flesh tone and the hair is a ash blonde with black spray dye
Thanks, but I’m talking about the mask when it’s fully converted. Going off by this picture, the hair color seems to vary from each mask. I assume the skin color would be the same?
Edit: Then again, maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see how mixing an orange color (like the one on the unaltered Kirk mask) with white would create a pink color.
It wouldn’t.
However, add dirt, grime, multiple layers of paint, smear it with a dozen sets of hands, each with their own varying levels of cleanliness and oil production, and use a blue filter while shooting…. who knows, it may look pinkish.
Also, we don’t know if anything else was applied during production either. Who’s to say a handler didn’t try to clean the mask a bit with some soapy water and a red rag between takes or something, you just never know. I guess that’s the point I’m trying to make.
I will say this, I successfully and permanently changed the blonde hair color of a Kirk to a dirty brown looking color using black spray paint. I applied the paint thick(ish) like TLW and the hair looked jet black. I let it dry and crust over. I then teased, pulled, and rolled the hair through my fingers, used a bit of soapy water to get it to be less crusty and easier to style with some hairspray. By the time I was done, the hair was no longer jet black or blonde. It was a shade of brown.
Once the hair was styled I misted over it to give it a slight blackening and it was done. It had some blonde left in the deeper fibers, shades of brown, and misted black. It created a nice depth of color.
One of the most prolific finishing artists in the hobby believes the Kirks were haired with a brown color and not blonde. I don’t believe that to be true. I think the masks were handled and touched up so frequently during shooting, by the actors, stylists, TLW, etc., that the original blonde hair took on a brown color beneath the black mist.
I wouldn’t doubt if some other kind of unintentional alteration caused the flesh tones to appear pinkish much like the hair takes on a different color after multiple layers and extensive handling.
It’s worth noting that the medley Kirk was uniquely painted. Most of the clerks that have surfaced have a more varied tone with mottling of a darker color.
And OP- You also have to take a new account that the white surrounding the exposed flesh area can affect the flesh tone and make it appear darker than normal by contrast.
Here you go, also the flesh basically bled through the white for the masks, the mask Tommy wears is how the Black Streaks n Tips would have been, but due to the handling of the mask, the it rubbed off onto the mask
Like so:
Not sure if this helps, but this is an example of how the orangish color scheme can change after white is applied on top of it!
That’s exactly how it looked!
