Just joined and introduced myself over in the introductory forum. While I have my eye on something like The Creep or the 78 Psycho, funds currently dictate that I mess around with what I have at the moment – a simple 86 Don Post. I see lots of vids aimed at modifying the 2003 and or 2006 DP masks, but nothing for the 86. I know the concept is the same, but does anyone have, or can they point me towards a good mod tutorial for the 86? Any guidance (short of tossing it in the trash ) would be appreciated.
There’s one that was modified into a more sinister looking Myers in the gallery under the 85/86 DP listing. You don’t see too many modded 85/86s though. It likely has more value as is, rather than altered, due to it’s vintage collectible nature.
Generally, most people consider the stock eye cuts too large to modify into a more screen accurate looking Myers mask.
As far as a tutorial, I’m not sure there are any floating around out there.
If your 86 is in good condition I would say to not alter it. Definitely don’t toss it in the trash. There are probably a lot of people around here that would like an 86 if the right opportunity presented itself to them.
I’m only joking about the trash. For a store bought mask (from years ago) its not a bad mask at all. I’ll post my pics from my intro thread here too. My biggest issue is that it is too clean (and yes in very good shape). By that I mean that the surface is shiny and could use some shadowing. If the concensus is to leave it alone, then by all means I will leave it alone. But it seems like it needs some shadowing around the lips and cheeks and something to tone down the shine. I’ll leave it to the experts, but it has a (c) 1986 Don Post stamp so I’m assuming that is what it is … the infamous DPTM that Post tried unsuccessfully to trademark in the early 80’s. Let me know.
The stamp says:
A Don Post Mask
(c) 1986 Don Post
Studios Inc.
The pics you posted are too small & unclear to really tell, but it looks like you have an 86 in wonderful condition there.
Honestly, my personal opinion is that I think you would devalue it quite a bit by modifying it.
The 85/86s aren’t exactly on the same level as the early 2000 DPs, they have quite a bit more collectible(ness) to them because they still have some original Kirk features.
I really appreciate the information. Maybe I will hold off and keep it as is. I only have a couple of cell phone grabs right now, but here’s a couple of larger pics for reference:
Fixed the pics as I had put up the wrong file code before…
I asked this question long ago and was told it would be better to leave it as is. I’m glad I did.
It just wouldn’t be an '86 DP if it were changed. I could care less about value. I enjoy knowing I have ‘the last’ good Myers mask DP put out.
Yours look to be a great shape so I would leave it be and display it the best way you can. These masks are known to go bad in a BAD WAY. Not many left in good shape. I actually had one melt to itself about 10yrs ago.
Enjoy that thing while it looks so good man. That was my first mask. Who knows how long it sat in a box, because i bought it NEW in the mid 2000’s, but as of last month, i found it looking like this…
And once it starts, the whole thing turns to glue. Had to get rid of it, for fear of it falling into something i’d rather not have latex goop all over. I STILL can’t get it fully off of the shelf that neck section melted onto
Wow. I guess when they go bad, they go bad quick. I got mine in the early 2000’s as well, so I guess I got lucky in that regard. Wonder how long the shlf life is now? And I’ve worn it out on at least a half dozen times. OK no mods, store carefully and plan on a replacement. Check. And I appreciate all of the input from everyone.
