Brent here. Formally known as “knuckles” on this board.
Where to begin.
A few years back I was gearing up to do what I hoped would be the ultimate fan film. I had been a seriously active board member here, and was insanely happy to have finally found a place where I could share my love of all things Halloween.
But it was not to be.
For those of you that remember me, you’ll remember that I had spent all summer that year casting, location scouting, revising the script, gathering props, masks and wardrobe items. I had almost everything ready, and had begun filming my own version of a ‘remake’ of the classic Halloween.
Then, in a matter of weeks, I got hit with multiple personal losses of massive proportions, and if that wasn’t bad enough, I got slapped with a lawsuit regarding my project. See, around this time things were very tumultuous in the ‘fan film’ world. People like George Lucas were more than happy to allow fans to make their own films, provided that they didn’t make any money on them. Their attitude was “go have fun in the worlds we created”, and we did.
But some other people were NOT so happy about fan films, or Myer’s mask makers, or what is, quite honestly, massive copyright infringement. Unfortunately for me, one of those such people caught wind of my little project and aimed to put the kaibash on it. I was slapped with both a cease all productions order and a gag order, so I couldn’t even tell everyone what was going on without risking getting into seriously big trouble. Essentially a certain movie studio exec had heard about the film (note: they DO browse these boards) and got the impression that I was going to be making a bunch of money off of their property. This was far from the case, but it didn’t stop them from raising holy hell and causing my lawyer to get well paid to defend me and my project.
This process went on for almost three years, and ultimately the case was dropped. It seems that the various powers that be decided to allow fan films and not make an issue out of them (and in fact, embrace them), as long as we don’t make any money off their intellectual properties.
Which brings me back here. Home. To say to all of you that I am truly sorry for all the lack of contact, the unknowing, and most of all for letting you down. I also want to say that I still have every bit of the props, masks etc. and while my full feature fan film won’t be getting done for a little while yet (I am currently working on another feature film), I am knee deep in a half-hour long fan film called Halloween: Boogyman, which I hope will show you how serious I am about getting back into the swing of things here.
Damn I missed you guys.
