I bought some knife wielder hands last year from Mr. Mulpagano and they are absolutely amazing. They literally changed the entire dynamics of my Myers mannequin, once I put the hands on. I wanted to order more from Nick this year, however, he mentioned to me that because of his busy schedule he wouldn’t be able to have any hands done until November.
So I thought maybe I would try and see if anyone in here has done them in the past, and if so, can you give me any tips on what I would need to do them? I figured it would be a fun project to at least try and do them. I usually put my Myers mannequin out around mid September, so I wanted to get started on it now in case it takes some time and practice to figure it out.
I did see some individuals online who created them using alginate and then casting them. It didn’t look too complex, but I wanted to see if anyone in here can give me any suggestions at all. Thanks again in advance!
To do it on the cheap, alginate and resin is the way to go. Of course there’s probably going to be people suggest silly ideas like paper mache or something, but alginate produces a perfect casting and can be done easily at home. Just get a basic life cast kit from smooth-on.com
I used alginate to make the mold then used plaster to make the hand. The issue came the weight if the hand vs the mannequin arm. I cut the original hand off and because it’s hollow I got some of that expanding spray foam wall filler stuff sprayed into the mannequin arm. Then I had some old brackets hanging around home I drilled 3 on connecting the hand to the arm and haven’t had any issues. I would have used a resin or something if I though about it but.
Thank you again, and to everyone for the suggestions. I really appreciate it. I’m looking into placing my order from smooth on tonight. The one thing I’m curious about is the casting aspect of it, in regards to the grip. I wanted the right hand to have the closed grip because I’m gonna be placing the knife in that hand. With the hands I bought last year, I had to take a utility knife to remove the inside of the grip. I’m guessing I can do the same with the casting foam?
