Are rehauls worth it?

I know everyone is free to think and do what they want at the end of the day, i am not against rehauls since a lot of so-so masks can become works of art after a nice rehaul. My question comes in the following situations;

If you buy say a tots mask for 60-70$ and then pay 200-250$ for a rehaul (some artists are charging this much) the total comes down to around 300-320$ plus shipping if the tots mask was acquired online and if the shipping is not included in the rehaul price of the artist.

For that amount of money isnt it just better to try to purchase an indie mask thats already good to go? If you buy the h6 from tots and get it rehauled from say handiboy who i believe charges 200$, isnt it better to buy an h666 or raining red or another indie h6 mask? When we know these mass produced masks are probably made from cheap latex that might rot within a few years or go with indie mask that uses better quality materials?

I guess it depends on how much you like the sculpt and the finish work.

I’m not sure mass produced masks are made from any different latex than anyone else. Actually I’ve seen indie guys use some kind of softener in their masks that would probably make it rot faster than a mass produced mask.

If you take care of the mask, keep it dry and powdered and out of sunlight it should last quite a long time though, whether it’s indie or mass produced. Heat and sunlight I think are the big killers of masks.

To a degree. I don’t agree with people paying $200 to rehaul say a $60 TOTS Hospital mask but I can see you getting a 75k overhauled for your ideal look

Yes thats what i think as well. Artists can charge what they want of course but 100-160$ should be what they charge for one. Paying anymore than that starts being too much imo unless its a superstar artist and their work is highly sought after or an artist who really makes the best movie-accurate paintjobs etc. But if its your regular repaint and rehair then no. Saw a rehauled tots h18 with average paintjob go on ebay for like 400$.

I believe it all comes down to personal preference and your budget, and what YOU feel it worth it. For $200+ I feel I’m better off buying an indie mask by a very talented artist.

I thought I remember reading a particular thread on here that said TOTS masks are made out of something that doesn’t rot, so I guess that could be an advantage of an overhaul. Could be totally wrong though its just a vague memory.

there are good artists doing re-hauls for 100 bucks.i,m lucky as i,m an airbrush artist and do all the work myself on my tots masks.learned how to re-hair from the dvd i got from handiboy studio.re-hairing is easy to pick up. just grabbed an extra tots h-2 and practiced.the only hard mask to repaint was the elrod and dulling down that high gloss shit they used on it .

I guess like people are saying… It depends on your desire to have a completely screen accurate copy. If you can afford to do it, there are some talented convertors out there. Myself… I’m happy with what the new MM2018 mask looks like from the factory. besides… the days of spending 3-400 bucks on a indie mask are pretty much over. I have a kid going off to college next year and another three years out. No extra for masks over 100.00.

I don’t think indie masks are dead, there will always be a market for a very nicely done, accurate replica. Not everyone can get them, but they aren’t going anywhere.

As for the Reworks out there (mine as well), I totally understand the need for them. The factory paint hides the beauty of the sculpt, so spending a couple extra bucks to get it reworked into a better mask is worth it. But it really comes down to preference. Some people are going to like the mask as is, and more power to them… but I know that I absolutely HAD to repaint mine. No way I could not.

As for prices, I know that the big guys are going to charge big money… because they are in demand and to give ANY of their time to something like this… it’s got to be worth their while. Most of the big names are not offering the service, because they have such a significant workload. I know that I personally don’t charge a lot, but I am new to this. I’ve only ever made ONE mask, the Inhuman, and there are only a couple out there because my mold was crap. So I have painted maybe 6 masks EVER. I can’t charge a lot, and I have always tried to be affordable anyway. It really just comes down to how much somebody wants a rework, and how much they are willing to pay. Basic supply and demand.

I’d say this:

I see about 15 guys rehauling the new 2018 TOTS mask. Half of them don’t even strip the paint, and some don’t even rehair it. Just style it. They all charge $200.

For you to pay that much money to rehaul a $60 mask, I’d say go with either James Carter, Freddy Loper or Heath Johnson. They are fair and actually do a full rehaul unlike these other guys trying to make a quick buck. One even was using white out lmao. Be careful

heh, a guy on facebook just asked me how much for the 2018 I repainted and I quoted him under $200. Guess I’m doing it wrong. /sarcasm. Lol

Jeez… white out? WTF?

For a mass produced mask I would try not to spend more than 100 on a rehaul. But to get my shat blank converted involving eye cuts etc, I would pay 200

Exactly my sentiments. $600 all and all well spent and I know that they sell for double that due to JC wait time but I love it too much to part with. Mass produced masks feel too flimsy for me to invest $300 into it

Couldn’t believe it either man. People are selling stock copies for $150+ the market is so messed up. If you’re taking commissions I’ll send people your way though man you seem to be killing it

What I think is strange is that Freddy and James and Nick all the top-dogs charge about $210-$250 for a full conversion, and we have folks charging almost that much JUST for a ToTS repaint.

Yeah, it’s crazy. I never understand people scalping others in the community like that. We are supposed to be together on this, the Halloween fandom has always been very tight nit and friendly. I hate when I see people taking advantage.

I appreciate the kind words. I’m looking into getting an airbrush, and practicing hairing to get my overhauls and paint work a bit more of a complete. I really want to be available to people as an option for painting masks. I just love doing it so much. :drinkers:

sadly that seems to be part of the history of the Myers Mask Fandom. From MMP to CGP to others. It’s always been happening. It got so bad at one point I just left the fandom all together for many years and wanted no part of any of it. Not only did you have rip-off artists running rampant and charging insane prices for their recasts (while stealing money and ripping people off at the same time), you had their army of “fans” constantly defending them. It was very gross to see and pushed a lot of people out of the hobby. It also made some of the more decent makers leave the community too.

Things seem to be quite a bit better now though. And it looks like ToT has leveled the playing fields in a lot of ways. You no longer have to spend $300. to get a halfway decent Myers mask.

True. I remember a lot of that drama, and it’s been nice not having that recently. Just sucks to see that kind of abuse happening again.

I just completed the repaint/rehaul on my 2018 Tots mask. I charge $50 if anyone is interested. Love the sculpt on this mask! God bless
