Best paint to use for TLW Kirk conversion?

I’m planning on getting a ToTs Kirk and converting it in the TLW style, but am not wanting the paint to crack. Most spray paints will cause the paint to crack, so I want to know what spray paint is the best to use for it, or if I should just use the alternative and get the rest of what I need for my airbrush and use liquid latex white paint.

Any spray paint from a can will crack. There’s no way around it. There’s a reason anyone who wants their mask to last as long as possible use latex paints and an airbrush.

Plastidip does not crack, and is readily available in your local hardware stores.

Spray paint on plasti dip will crack, if you plan to try that

If you use a very light coat of spray paint it won’t crack. But I’m talking really light!! If you do it right, there won’t be enough to crack. It gives off a strange fleshy but white look. I did it a few times and bent the shit out of it days and weeks later and there was absolutely no cracking. Less is more.

With spray paint i’ve found a fine mist as Acorad say will create droplets small enough that the cracks wont be visible. Seal with plastidip to make sure it doesnt fall off

I’m pretty sure that the chemical composition for spray paint was a bit different back then, I remember reading something on that, maybe some foreign markets still use a similar formula.

Anyone ever tried latex spray paint?

you can use white plasti dip…it is amazing…i paint most my masks with it

Really? I’ve used it for sealing in very light mistings and in thicker layers for smoothing out imperfections, but as a paint, well I’ve never thought of it because it tends to come out in a narrow, vertical, thick stream. I’d be curious to give white PlastiDip a shot for the heck of it, but I can’t imagine it would be used the same way as a paint as one would use it as a sealant. Do you have any pics of masks done with white PlastiDip, or what’s your technique?

Dude plasti dip comes out real spotty and splatty I don’t know about using it for paint

If you want to paint a mask correctly, it needs to be done with an airbrush and proper paint. Anyone who says differently probably hasn’t wanted to invest in the equipment or learning curve. TLW didn’t want to invest, but his process worked for the few weeks of shooting time. But the mask hasn’t held up well. To have control over the results requires investment in the right materials and processes. I know I’m a snob but that’s just my 2 cents worth. You never see a high end mask spray pained and there’s a reason the best artists don’t paint them that way.

Definitely, appliance epoxy spray paint. The brand that TLW used was krylon. The most readily available is the rustolium brand, which works every bit as well. It says it is a hard paint on the packaging, but it is quite flexible, and remains that way. I tested this spray paint about a week after the video was released a year ago, and the mask I painted still has flexible, stretchable paint.

I know this somewhat contradicts what I said in the original post but I wouldn’t mind the mask going through the same aging as the actual hero, although it won’t be as roughly used compared to the hero.

This is the Krylon White Appliance he used

I’ve used it for base paint many times, Once you get the hang of it, it goes on just as good as an airbrush…I dont see why people are knocking it, It is art and the way I chose to paint them up, ‘‘the correct way’’ does not always have to be an airbrush with latex paint…But rather it is the most common way, I’ve been sculpting, Molding…pulling, painting and hairing masks for years, I can tell you it is not a bad way to paint masks…It depends if I have an H5 for example, I start with the base white, Then an extremely light mist of black to get a greyish tone which comes out like this, I do similar for H1s, Both examples shown here.
