As the title says, I’m looking for ways to seal my recent rehauls to keep them safe, Plastidip is not an option (as it’s not readily available here) and I want an opaque/matte finish
Would brushing this diluted with water work? I use it for miniatures but I dunno how well it would work for a flexible material such as latex.
Exercise caution when using Liquitex varnish on masks. It’s not flexible when dry.
It’s fine if you mist on a thin coat or two, but don’t put it on too thick. If you apply varnish too thick, it will crack when the latex is flexed, and it can even cause the underlying paint layers to crack.
Plasti-dip, while popular for masks, can cause a couple different problems.
First it can peel away from the underlying paint layer. See below.
The other issue with Plasti-dip is a bigger concern for collectors. The accelerants used in Plasti-dip, like most aerosols, can cause the latex to deteriorate faster over time. It’s not noticeable right away, but it can cause a mask to rot faster. I learned this last bit from a friend of mine who in the mask and haunted house industry.
Hmmm, is there a dedicated flexible sealer for masks? I’ve heard about Flex Gloss but… 1) i don’t want gloss and 2) don’t think it’s available here where I live
Wondering at this point if I should just leave my masks unsealed as they are, what are the risks?
I’m mainly just wondering in case I make some for others, cause I know i take good care of these, store them in their cases away from dust and try not to get them wet and all that, but I dunno, for a customer, i’d like to be sure to give em something that will certainly last
Can i brush it on diluted with water? I don’t have an airbrush unfortunately.
I tried this method with a bootleg mask and the vallejo paint i posted above and it seems like it doesn’t crack, tried beating the mask up, crumple it up and i couldn’t see any cracks, will do more experimenting.
You can brush it on. The cracking I mentioned earlier only happened because I applied it too heavily. I’ve used liquitex on several other masks with no issues. I have actually used the vallejo varnish on masks for small touch-ups, but I’ve never personally used it for a full coating. If what you have is working for you, then I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
