Here’s a pic I found online from h1 1978 and in the pic the coveralls look green. Now I don’t know what to think, green, navy, gray? At this point I give up trying to figure out what color the coveralls were.

Whoaaaaa they do look green in this pic! Good find for sure!

On that German (?) lobby card, I would guess it was incorrectly exposed. I have seen them in the past. You will notice unnatural brighter green shadows & highlights on Curtis’ clothing, as well as the background window shade. I believe other cards in this set also have a warmer green-heavy exposure. As far as we know, Cundey used blue lighting exclusively for night shots.
Beyond these cards, there are no other source of materials that suggest such high levels of a warm green were normal. Thus, my guess as to unbalanced exposure. A debatable image, for sure.
WOW, I always thought the coveralls in H1 were dark navy blue but I suppose that’s just Cundey’s ‘blue’ lighting. I have to put the DVD in again and take some closer looks. I have the Limited Edition DVD with Dean Cundey’s coloring so it should be pretty accurate.
I now am officially confused! HELLA! I think its what your eyes see. And I really think it was spruce green like Debra Hill said. Well she didnt say SPRUCE.

I think Loogs nailed it.
Hello all, I was actually very lucky to contact Kim Walker the set photographer for a lot of John Carpenters films. She told me that by her estimation the coveralls were a greyish green.
In the schoolyard scene you can clearly see that the coveralls are a greenish color. They are just really dirty. Even when Nick Castle is climbing into the station wagon you can see that the coveralls are a greenish color.
A lot of maintenance men and garbage men still have uniforms in this very color. To me it’s like a minty greenish grey.
I don’t know I’m just going by feeling ( You have the wrong feeling
)and what I see on the television. Yes… Dean Cundy’s lighting does play a big part in the night time scenes. When Michael gets up and Laurie has her back turned, when he gets up the coveralls are greenish in tint, and when he gets closer I see the same greenish tint. Then when he chokes her they look blue.
In that German lobby card where they look green I believe it’s because they are green. Not that exaggerated shade mind you because the color is terribly off, however the background items like Laurie’s clothes, the couch are the same shades as they were on the set, but the color is just off by what what we see in the film.
Then there is the Olivewood debate. I have never owned a pair, but I know for sure that the coveralls are NOT brown, nor do they have any brown in them.
Charcoal, now that’s a possibility. I too own a pair of Red Caps, and someone in this post mentioned that they have a greenish, or possibly bluish tint to them. I took mine out of storage yesterday, these are the ones I converted to look more like Big Macs’. Well they have that bluish greenish tint to them. I distressed mine with acrylic paints to simulate oil and grime and transmission fluid of course without the smell that goes with it.
With all the grime there they look a lot like what i see in the film. A greyish greenish color covered by god knows what and Hot Pastrami hero residue, from the dude that worked in them for probably years before Castle wore them. Yummy.
In the end though they are just coveralls whether they be Big Mac’s, Big Ben’s, Sears, Roebucks. To the stickler for detail and realism the quest will be never ending until you get every shade imaginable in every vintage brand that has no seam on the back panel, the 2 snaps on the sleeve’s, the right colar height and so on and so forth. It will be never ending. Is it fun though? Yes it is. It’s like a treasure hunt and when you find something that hasn’t been in stores for over 30 years its special to all of us who collect Halloween.
The ones I have are KEY. They actually have similar snaps, pockets, etc. were a dark olive green color, I “feathered” flat black spray paint, then weathered them. Overall captures a pretty cool look, at times look dark green, black at night and under a blue light all blends to give the navy look we sometimes see.

isnt there anyone who worked on the movie can answer this question? ik a LONG shot but hey, a group of wonderful fans can do anything right>
Have u searched the boards here? THere is literally tons of info and debate on this topic. Even some recent discoveries. Long story short… we will never truly know but the safest bet so far is a greyish green. That is for the the 1978 original. There was a different set worn in all of H2 (1981) and those where Spruce Green.
