Did I get a bad TOTS H40 mask?

My TOTS H40 mask came in today, and I don’t feel the same energy I got from the reviews of this mask.

Firstly, I didn’t realize the mouth was meant to be open. I looked around on this forum and saw that it is accurate for H1 and H40, which are the same mask. It just seems that the mouth is always closed in the movie. I knew before hand that the mask was small, so I’m not surprised that its a squeeze to get me into it, however, because my chin barely fits into the mask chin, the mouth is noticeably open when I wear it, like Michael is some sort of mouth breather.

The rest of the mask is poorly painted to me, and that’s okay, I’m just curious if that’s the norm for this mask. I know there’s a big market for repaints and such.

The hair seems fine, with a little work it shouldn’t be an issue.

So I guess my main question is based off my description and pictures, did I get a typical, bad, or good TOTS mask? Is there anything I can do to make it wearable this Halloween? Do people ever glue the mouth closed? Is that a dumb idea when it comes to breathing? Any other thoughts are welcome as well

Unfortunately, many of them are like that. It’s hard to get a “good” copy of this mask straight from TOTS. Personally, I would not buy one if I cannot pick out the copy myself. Best bet would be to spend some money to have it repainted. The sculpt is great, but the paint on this mask often leaves much to be desires.

Any tips for the sizing? My main issue in terms of wearability is how the stretch of my head (which is less than 24") causes the mask to distort to the point the mouth is open, and it looks very different than it does when I’m just holding it

Edit: I have about 3-4 inches of hair, would buzzing my head be worth it/noticeable difference?

To me, the paint isn’t THAT bad, but whatever you feel. After all, it’s your mask, it should be how you want it. But for sizing, one thing that I found is that is would stretch to your head the more you wear it, and you can expedite the process by wearing it while using a hair dryer on it. Buzzing your hair would make a degree of difference, but not a lot. It may be just enough, however

The mouth of the 2018 mask is only open when Nick wears it. Anytime James wears it, it looks closed. You can take a strong tape and seal the mouth shut for display. The paint on your copy just seems like what everyone has been getting. In terms of a stock mask, it’s the usual.

I dunno man. Here are a few shots of my TOTS H40, I ordered it not long after they were taking pre-orders, it finally arrived mid October 2018 think I got one of the better copies out there to be honest, I really lucked out. Now I did play with the hairline a little bit myself to improve the look but I only played with the hairline.

The funny thing is though, I just had Reme Rehaul mine. I took this mask to meet Newcastle and had him sign it on the inside and although it looks decent for a completely factory copy, it had to look worthy of that autograph IMHO so I had RemZap finish it.
Looking forward to having it in my hands again very soon looking incredible.

The eyecuts are quite big on your copy as well. Most copies I see do have a paint job similar to that. For my H18s I have the mouth slit all the way open and trim the inner lips a bit so it doesn’t look too puckered almost like a horizontally long oval shape. Just repainting it usually makes it look like a completely different mask. The hairline and hairstyle I would tweak a bit so it’s not so slick back. You’d be surprised how minor changes like these would drastically alter the look of a mask. Here’s a photo of mine for reference on the lips.

Nice, Reme sent me a preview shot last week as he was still finishing it up

That’s a beautiful rehaul right there.

Thanks man I just got it delivered last night!

Did a little unboxing vid too if anyone is interested.
