Do you know that there were 2 versions of this mask?
A $40 version and the Deluxe. The $40 mass produced China version sold for $40 and the Deluxe hand made from Don Post sold for $100.
Yes, a costume shop I know does have 3…believe it or not which is obvious by your very short stint here you don’t.
PS-I know Don Post at Don Post Studios and I just emailed him about this mask. I believe it was still in production until 00 but we’ll find out shortly.
I’m not trying to get in between the argument here but I’ll add my 2 cents. The $40 Shatner is obviously worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I haven’t seen a whole lot of tagged Shatners in recent years. Most are already converted or the tag is ripped off. A lot of guys prefer these $40 versions over the “deluxe” $100 version simply because of the size ( a bit larger) and thinness of the mask itself. It’s not a stretch at all to think someone will pay $150 for it. I feel like maybe I am partially responsible for MalfunctioningHumans listing price b/c I mentioned it in this thread earlier when he posted it. Billy, if you know of a costume shop that has 3 of these, you should pick them up and sell yourself. While I’m not too serious about buying one, if its at the right price I’d definitely pick one up to add to my DP collection. But we disagree on the value here and I don’t really think it’s the best place to tell someone it’s not worth the money publicly - PM and give him your opinion. Noob or Veteran, I treat everyone equally.
You are not being very rational. Either that, or you are just lying. In my auction I explicitly say: “There were two versions of this mask, and this is the $40 version, which even back in 1999 sold for $150 a piece.” Yet you are trying to accuse me of not knowing the very fact that I am stating in my auction.
Zeal is a good quality (a virtue) but only when it is compounded with logic, and unfortunately you seem to be a little lacking of the last one.
Yes, I have fewer posts in the forum (fewer than you.) But WarLock is a much more veteran member of this forum, and even he acknowledged earlier in this thread that this mask is rare and worth at least $150.00.
I’m just an honest guy selling something that I really love, and bringing it to the attention of everyone in the forum. I believe there are plenty of knowledgeable people who can appreciate that. Not everybody is a non-purist like you.
By the way, I think you are blowing smoke regarding that mythical “Costume Shop in Ohio.” Please prove me wrong. Even more, post the phone of the store here, as I am sure there are plenty of “purists” in the forum that would like to buy out their stock.
Actually, I would have posted the mask at that price regardless. Like I said, I bought it originally for $150.00 10 years ago, and so did a bunch of other people. I’d rather sit on it for another 10 years than sell it at a loss. I don’t remember seeing a new, untagged, and unworn '99 Shat in a long time, and based on private communication that I am maintaining with several people I know there is an increasing demand for it.
Billy just had a dream about a costume shop in Ohio. I also had a dream once where I walked into a Halloween Superstore and I found a mint '75.
I’m not putting it past Billy at all - he very well may know where some of these are. The guy has been around a long time and knows his stuff and is very informative - most anyone can tell you that. We’ve been friends for a while so no beef there. I do not agree with how he replied to your thread though, no biggie.
I’m sure you did pay $150 for it a while ago. I believe I sold one untagged for around $125 back in 2006 and I’ve sold 2 different $100 versions for over $400. Obviously that $400 price tag no longer applies b/c Sam McCain is doing a great job on the latest release at a very reasonable price.
I understand what you are saying, and I agree with you. I’m sure Billy is a very informative guy and an outstanding member of the forum. It’s just that I don’t think he’s being very rational. He also seems to either not know or purposefully diminish the value of the mask that I am offering. Perhaps he is trying to dissuade other people from bidding on it so that he won’t have as much competition?
I don’t know. All I know is that you will not likely see another one of these for sale anytime soon (if ever,) unless Billy decides to provide us with the phone number for that “Costume Shop in Ohio.” New, more exact Myers replica masks can always be produced. But a vintage, new mask which is part of the history of Halloween has a value all in itself IMO.
I agree. I apologize if I didn’t sound friendly enough. I just had to defend the facts. If someone accuses me of saying something I didn’t say, or if they are not willing to accept hard facts, I just have to say something.
I have never had the chance to be near a $100 '99 Shat. You mentioned about the thickness and the size being different. Other than that, are there obvious differences in the finish? I would think so, given the price difference. Also, if I understand correctly, was the $100 model manufactured in the U.S.?
I can only imagine that the $100 is that much rarer, so it is awesome that you had one of those at one point. Have you ever had (or handled) a '75?
I bought the mask in October of 1999 (I knew that.) I also knew that production had been halted, because the seller back then made sure to make it clear. I really didn’t know the exact year or model of the mask, but now I do thanks to all the helpful answers I got to my question. I really appreciate the help I got from WarLock and the other members. This forum is the best resource there is for Myers mask collectors (and I don’t even consider myself one, as I said earlier in the thread.)
Don Post, Jr.'s reply…
BK,
That was right around when Paper Magic purchased DPS so it’s possible it went on into 2000 and 01. From the look of the pics that’s a $40 one.
I am a bit confused…so Billy do you think it’su nfair to sell a mask for $150 if it was $40 originally?
Not trying to start ANYTHING, i am just asking…most DP’s when they came out had tags around $40 or so right?
Most old DP’s sell for triple that now…
take care, Jon
Thanks for the information. Could you elaborate a little? I am positive this mask was bought no later than 1999. The seller back then also mentioned that production had been halted. Are you saying production went on into 2001? Any proof of that?
Also, if you find the phone for that place in Ohio, please post it. I’m really interested in getting a hold of them.
No, these sold for $40…they did not sell for $150 in 99 or really anytime after that until maybe 2001. If he did purchase it in 1999 for $150 then ouch…he could have got the deluxe for $100, that’s what I’m pointing out.
If you read his wording, it’s a bit misleading; that’s all I’m saying and stated about this.
“There were two versions of this mask, and this is the $40 version, which even back in 1999 sold for $150 a piece.”
