I just found this website last night, and I must say it’s awesome. Anyway, I wonder if I could benefit from the expertise of the people in the forum to determine whether this mask is a 1998 or 1999 Captain Kirk. I bought it in September of 1999. The seller was selling his last stock of about 7 or 8 masks, and the information I got from him was that this might probably be the last Captain Kirk mask produced by Don Post due to licensing issues. Even back then the seller managed to sell the masks at a reasonably high price.
I don’t think it’s a 1998 because it doesn’t have the swollen features that I think 1998 models have. Could this be a $40 1999 model? The latex is about 2 mm thick, by the way.
Thanks for confirming that. I did a search for the 1999 mask versions, and I couldn’t find much, except that the $100 deluxe version bears a closer resemblance to William Shatner than the $40.00 one.
I don’t know what I’ll do with it. Do people normally convert these, or is it better to keep it as it is?
Thank you for your responses. I’ll think about what to do with the mask. Converting it myself as an experiment sounds appealing, but I din’t know how much I would stand to lose if I botch it. Knowing now that this mask is not worth too much (being the $40 version) puts me at ease.
Just b/c it’s called the $40 99 Shatner doesn’t mean it’s worth that. It looks new and tagged so it’s worth at least $150 imo. I wouldn’t convert it b/c you don’t see these every day.
Alright, I think you guys are right about the conversion thing. The fact is that I can’t justify spending money to pay for a professional conversion, so I will probably end up keeping it. Or maybe I’ll end up selling it. I don’t consider myself a mask collector. Just a big fan of the original Halloween movies, which is what prompted me to get the mask to begin with. That being said, the amount of resources and dedication that I see put into these masks from folks in this forum is mind boggling.
Only a Don Post mask purist would spend $150 on this mask; it’s absolutely not worth it. Even converted, it will look nothing like “Myers”. Just leave it as a mass produced “Kirk”.
I love this statement…“There were two versions of this mask, and this is the $40 version, which even back in 1999 sold for $150 a piece.” So, according to this statement, this version was worth more than the $100 version made at Don Post Studios? I think not!
Thanks for your opinion, Kirk. The fact remains that this mask is highly sought after, and (as I said in my auction) even back in 1999 it sold for $150.00 a piece. I know that it originally retailed for $40.00 by Don Post, but after production was stopped, units of this mask sold for $150.00 a piece. I know because I and one of my buddies bought one each. I know of at least 7 masks that sold at that price. These masks are rare and in demand, and that is simply a fact.
As far as I know, the '75 Kirks didn’t sell for $15,000 to $20,000 originally, but that’s what a mint '75 would run you now. Anyone that has been exposed to the dynamics of collector items understands that rarity is a premium, and these things do revalorize. If you don’t get that it’s OK though, as everyone is entitled to their opinion.
If you can find a new, tagged, and unworn 99 Shat for less, please let me know as I know a few people that would like to get one though.
By the way, the HS mask is awesome. I believe Darren is the same guy that made the cast for the '99 that I’m selling, so it makes sense. I also would expect a few Myers mask purists to be around. A world without Michael Myers mask purists is not a world I would want to live in.
How did a $40 version sell for $150 a piece when you could get a deluxe from Don Post Studios for $100 in 1999?
It’s a $40 version…it sold for $40 back in 99. The prices on these did NOT spike up until they weren’t available in 00. But this statement is incorrect…“There were two versions of this mask, and this is the $40 version, which even back in 1999 sold for $150 a piece.”
DPS made a lot of this version and YES, I know of a Costume Shop in Ohio that has at least 3 of these.
You are obviously very passionate about this, but unfortunately you are wrong. These masks were selling for $150.00 a piece in eBay in October of 1999, because even then production had already been stopped.
Can you give me the phone number for that Costume Shop in Ohio so that I find out how much they are selling those for? If they are selling them for less than $150.00 and they are new and tagged, I might actually buy a couple of them. Please let me know of this supposed “Costume Shop in Ohio.”
While I appreciate your zeal about this, I must respectfully say again that you are wrong, and I am just stating the facts. I hope this does not upset you.
