I’ve long had measurements of my Kirk mask to share with anyone who asked and they’ve been posted
several times. Recently, there was a lot of speculation on variances, if any, there were with the mask
when it came to size.
The Kirks were advertised and produced in two different periods; first in the 1975 Star Trek television
series catalog ad then later in the 1979 Star Trek The Motion Picture catalog ad where they resculpted
Spock but for some reason (I heard it was due to running out of time) did not resculpt Kirk and used
the original 1975 Kirk mask Mold.
I contacted three owners; Pete Roberts (BigCat), Darren (Tony Moran Fan) and MM.net member “Puca”
and asked for measurements to match ones I had taken of my Kirk mask. I’m sure I speak for everyone
when I say a BIG thank you to them all.
I’ll be honest, after I gathered these I was hesitant to post them as there is always drama and trouble in
situations like this, but I know that the majority of the people will appreciate them so here they are.
Please keep the thread positive - no need for any drama here. I’ll ask the mods to remove anything that
is questionable.
These measurements are by no means scientific and by no means 100% accurate. As two owners of these
masks stated, the only 100% full-proof way to measure these is to have either a laser scan measure them
or have the same person measure them with extremely detailed instructions on how to do the measure-
ments. However, they are pretty close as everyone used the same measuring method (string), but there
is always room for slight variances. Basically, these should be considered for “averages” of the 1975/1979
Kirk masks.
Appreciate you going to trouble to compile these stats Josh. Looks like 11.5 in length is the standard although I’m sure there are a few in the bunch that cured a bit smaller. The Medley Kirk appeared larger in pics than the mask I received and now seeing these measurements it was definitely larger in all areas and a good inch and a half larger in length. Bry should have kept that Medley Kirk in his posession until his project was complete to compare the two. Would have saved so much time making this a much smoother transaction. Hopefully the enlarging process is a success.
Top left is Darren’s copy, top right was mine. Bottom left is BigCat Pete’s copy and the bottom right belongs to MM.net member “Puca” which is the mask formerly known as the Medley Kirk.
I can’t thank you (and the other Kirk owners) enough for this info. I’ve requested these measurements several times over the last few years and now it’s time to start playing with some clay again.
