I am a social studies teacher at a performing arts high school and we were allowed to dress up today as part of a fundraiser (note that I am still wearing my employee ID badge…haha). Of course, I chose to go as my favorite horror character of all time…
When I was putting the costume on in the office this morning, one of my female colleagues was getting creeped out. She didn’t even want me to come near her!
After that, I hung out in my classroom with the original Halloween soundtrack playing. The first student walked in, looked at me for about ten seconds from the doorway, and hesitantly asked who I was. I didn’t respond immediately and she asked if it was me and I nodded. Some other students started coming in a moment later and they were alternately freaked out and excited. One of the students said that he just watched Halloween the previous day!
The rest of the day I wore the costume off and on in classes and in the halls. Some students kept their distance, others were into it (one kid said “that is the coolest thing I have ever seen!”), while a minority didn’t even recognize the costume at all (or even know the film).
For lunch, I walked down the street to a hip nearby coffee and sandwich place with my costume on and a bunch of people were staring at me. There, I met up with my friend that was dressed as Michael Jackson…a meeting of the Michaels (which one is more creepy is up for debate).
Finally, I rounded out the day by showing the original Psycho in my Culture of Film class. I was surprised that many of my students had not seen it, and there was a definite hush during the shower scene!
This might all sound very weird to you, but as a I said I work in a performing arts high school which is actually quite small and dressing up and “acting” the part were definitely cool with the students and staff.
Anyone else dress up as Michael at work today?
FYI - The mask is a Sinister Studio “Hiro” mask that I cannot be happier with.
