Dying Mohair

Hey everyone so I’ve been experimenting with different fibres for my mask. The H2 copy I posted was Crepe which worked well and great for the ultra matted down look but it’s not quite as fine and lacks the sheen of Kirk hair.

Mohair is nice but I’ve been having trouble with dying it. I’ve tried hair dyes but the colour is coming out not so great, kind of an underlying greenish tint to it?

I was hoping someone had some recommendations for specific dyes? Looking for Kirk and h2 colour. Thanks if anyone can help out!

Acid dyes work well. You basically simmer the hair in a pot of water, dye & some vinegar over a gas stove for an hour.
I’ve found you need to really separate the hair out and not overstuff the pot, or the dye will be streaky/thin.

There are wool fibers that are crepe-y but a little more lustrous.
I’ve tried mohair, but unfortunately I bought kid mohair which is way too fine. Just looks weird.

This is Lincoln wool on a TOTS mask I am in the process of overhauling:
(I stuffed the dyeing a bit and didn’t use enough, hence the fabulous blond)

The funky hairstyle is the start of a blood tears stunt mask effort.

Wow! That looks great! What kind of dye did you use?

It’s an acid dye. Crystals you mix into water. Needs simmering heat and some vinegar to bind. I’ve had no issue dyeing wool, mohair or yak so far. It just takes a bit of practice getting the amount right.
