Do we have hocks that actually derive from a movie mask or a movie mold? I know the JDF A/B does have some linage but is that the only one period? And with JDF no longer exiting does that leave us with no options if movie linage is what one is after?
After seeing the post from march earlier this year on the jasonlives blog i got even more interested in this. Seeing that museum mask with it being “a bit more oval shaped and with larger eye cavities” i got more concerned with what masks actually capture that look and that actually have linage.
This question has probably already been answered so i want to apologize for resurrecting this question but all the posts on this or likewise are so old that many pictures and info are often missing.
Thanks for the suggestion! Looked into this and they do look very impressive. Their part 3-4 blanks are called the RB30 mold.
Wonder if it has any movie ties…?
Just quickly threw together a couple op comparisons:
To answer some questions and clear up some of the back and forth and misinformation in this thread-
Frightstuff did not come from an original part 3 screen used mold, but rather derived from a casting from part 3 that was shrunken and misshapen a bit.
To explain further, technically JDF and Frightstuff were the only “movie mold” masks that our hobby had that derived from the P3 mold.
The “mystery mask” on display in the Hollywood Museum is, from what we can tell, a leftover mask from Friday 3 molds that was refinished on set of P6 and was recast to make the buck. Some type of master cast was made by Reel FX of that same “mystery mask”, but it was shrunken, likely due to the material used. This, or a cast of it, is what was used to make the buck for the P7 masks. Ken used a casting of this shrunken buck in the 90s to make demonstration pulls at shows, thus creating what are known as the “P88 blanks”. A casting made off this was used to make his Frightstuff blanks.
update If you saw this original post, JDF did NOT recast frightstuff. Here is JDF speaking on the origins of his casts:
I did not recast a Frightstuff blank to make my Style A/B molds. The blank that I used to make my A/B molds was one of the so-called 1988 production blanks, that was found at Reel FX after Martin Becker had passed away. This was around 2005/06, before Frightstuff was even a thing.
The next best blanks on the market shape-wise are Crash and IlusiveFX, but that’s just my opinion.
Jeff never bought the molds off Ken, see above.
Neither Crash nor Auz retooled a DMC to make their Part 5. This isn’t necessarily on topic but it feels important to say- DMC’s masks are not movie mold. He has never been able to produce any evidence of this and the molds certainly don’t speak for themselves. If they are derivative in any way shape or form it has been retooled or resculpted by David to the point that they arent even movie mold anymore.
Of course! Crash sculpted his using an original Fibrosport mask, then molded a mask made from that to make the buck for his P5, just like how they did for production on that film. Auz I did the same steps to get to his P5 as far as I’m aware, but maybe he sculpted his initial 3 ground up rather than using a Fibrosport? I’m unclear on that part, but he may be able to chime in here and let you know.
I’ve seen a few Illusive Fx hocks from time to time but have no knowledge about them, tried contacting him on fb last year and still hasn’t responded so i thought that he also left the hobby.
I did not retool a DMC blank to make any of my masks. My 3-6 blanks come from a vintage Fibrosport and recasting of my own masks like they did for each movie.
I agree that I don’t think there’s anything out there with movie mold lineage of any kind before part 6. As far as blanks go. I think part 6, 7 and 9 use virtually the same blank though. With 9 possibly being some kind of a recast of a part 7 blank or something. It’s odd.
With part 6 being the first movie that we have movie linage masks from, are you referring to the part 6 from fiberglass masks? Or the 88 production blanks? Or are there even more?
It’s been a while since I’ve posted here. Someone sent me this thread last night, and I just wanted to clear up what ghostlyshape has said here. I did not recast a Frightstuff blank to make my Style A/B molds. The blank that I used to make my A/B molds was one of the so-called 1988 production blanks, that was found at Reel FX after Martin Becker had passed away. This was around 2005/06, before Frightstuff was even a thing.
Regarding the availability of my blanks. I am going to be launching a new website soon, called FearCityCreations.com. I will have hockey mask kits available. I’m not sure if I’ll go back to selling/supplying blanks again though. There’s just been too much drama in the Facebook groups, though much of the drama llamas in those communities seemed to have died off. So, who knows. Maybe.
Wow, thanks for that very useful bit of information there! Yeah, i personally miss your A/B blanks, especially during this time as they seem to have been one of the only part 3-4 out there with some sort of movie linage even if it’s not from anything before part 6 or 7 as stated before in the thread.
