The clown wyou guys did is killer, such a great piece.

Something that still perplexed me about that original clown mask is how the moving mouth mechanism would work. I’d thought of a bunch of ways but could never quite get it lol.

That and when the catalog photo was found it confirmed my theory about there being 2 bands (one on each side) instead of one from side to side, but I still wonder about that piece of material that crosses the open eye orbital. My best guess on that is it is the rubber band itself, but I’m curious if that plays into how the jaw moves somehow.

We definitely got the strap wrong. The actual elastic we used seemed fine, but using one piece going around the head wasn’t correct. I believe that the actual mask features full loops, glued into place at strategic places to keep the mask from cracking. Rather than one strap going across the entire head, the loops simply wrap around each ear. This is likely the case, as Will Sandin has been quoted saying that the mask nearly ripped his ears off with how many takes they had to do for the scene. He described the experience as pretty painful. We did later end up gluing a piece of elastic between the eye-cuts to mimic this effect and strengthen the masks, but weren’t quite on the money just yet. (Seen down below)

As far as the jaw, a piece of elastic glued to the inside pulls off the mouth movement pretty well. Pretty sure that’s how Mike’s “sister mask” was assembled. Furthermore, I believe the straps were either stapled or stitched in place. At least the jaw strap was. More features you can see on Mike’s similar mask.

The only video of our jaw movement was this old moment from Mask-Fest in 2014. (This was when we debuted the masks and were still using inaccurate, store bought noses.)

Agreed on the dual band theory. That Will Sandin quote is exactly what inspired me to make this thread a few years back with screenshots showing points at which you could see the two rubber bands-

Ive often wondered how Mike’s was assembled, that absolutely makes sense construction wise with how you explained it above. Thanks for your insight on that!
I’m curious now about your thoughts on the nose. Do you believe it was also a separate piece glued/stapled onto a base mask?

I wish so badly that one of these would pop up. The full shot Colby shared shows the option to order was in bulk by the dozen, so more existed (and hopefully still do). Took 40 years to find the right coveralls and knife, hopefully it won’t take too many more for an actual copy of this damn elusive mask to surface lol.
