H1 Coveralls ...

Hey everyone, a major topic over the years has been the H1 coveralls …mainly what color were the coveralls the Shape wore .Obviously the color question has been debated for years but have any members here ever have the opportunity to ask either Nick Castle or Tommy Lee Wallace where the coveralls actually originated from?. It’s obvious now and honestly for a long time that the coveralls were not big macs and purchased at JC Penney…not to mention the way the coveralls are weathered in the movie I seriously doubt they were bought new from JC Penny and weathered by Wallace and co to look like that . More likely the coveralls were already in that condition. I never had the chance yet to ask either one of them this but I know the color question was asked of them countless times…anyone ever ask either where they actually came from?

They would have been borrowed, there’s no way you’d get coveralls like that done in the budget that they had, or even the time, Nick doesn’t remember the colour very well, Wallace is the best person to ask

As far as the coveralls being borrowed I totally agree that’s why I don’t understand the whole theory about them being bought at JC Penney and being big macs when it’s clearly obvious big mac coveralls in any style are not an exact match to the ones in the film.as far as the color goes again it’s just on going opinions but it would be great to have a definitive answer as to where the coveralls actually came from

Well we know they’re Sears Tradewears after 40 years, and the colour is even hard to nail, but a green pair of big macs can be altered, also charcoal ones too

Yes I have a few pair of the macs and they make a great substitute for the screen used Sears pair.the ones without the herringbone pattern obviously…with that being said like you have stated the macs have to be " altered " to really look screen accurate which is why I don’t know why for so many years the macs were speculated as being the brand .

it’s mostly cause Sears and Big Macs have a similar look, I saved pics of Tradewears that look exactly like Big Macs

They definitely do look close …

Here

:pumpkin: That’s a great looking pair

Tommy lee Wallace says in the famous video, where he describes the color. He says the coveralls were very common, typical
standard green coveralls that were in abundance back in the 70’s.

Its a low budget student film so they probably went to sears bought one pair and weathered them.
They’re not that grungy, just some sand paper and thinned black paint for the oil stains.

He described the color as “green…soaked in grey” So the color is green with undertones of grey.

You can make it really easy, if you have spruce green coveralls, just soak them in half a bottle of charcoal grey fabric dye

That’s one theory about getting the coveralls at Sears although i disagree and highly doubt that . That’s the same as most everyone saying for the past 12 plus years they went to JC Penny and did the same thing .nah doubt it . It would be great if someone had a definitive answer as to where they actually came from. That would be the 1st question I would ask Wallace or Castle if I see one of them at a con

Castle won’t remember, he doesn’t remember the coverall colour either, but that’s due to his age, nobody stays young forever or remembers everything from 40 years ago

:pumpkin: Lol that is so true lol that’s why I tend to stay away from the exhausting color question but as to where they came from I think that would be a better chance of getting the right answer

I don’t think they were purchased new bc you can plainly see that there is a hole in the sleeve. I don’t think they would have weathered them that much.

EXACTLY… and considering the pic u posted is really one of the only times u really see the coveralls close up with detail…the shots are either far away or night or in the dark mostly …I seriously doubt they would have weathered the coveralls like that considering those facts . They weren’t thinking about that lol
It’s like the same with the olive drab jungle boots…what mechanic I’d gonna be working in Vietnam jungle boots? Lol maybe the boots came from the same source as the coveralls …

That’s been my theory for years they were borrowed from some random team member/family/friend, and most likely given right back when filming was done. And I’m also not totally convinced they were Sears tradewears 100% sure they could be(they line up pretty well), but I think they could also be just some random brand from back in the day. We will most likely never know. My 2 most wanted questions would be if they were borrowed and where they might possibly be now. I know it was a low budget film and didn’t expect it to become what it is today, but you would think someone would have at least a clue(maybe not the answer) about those questions.

You are totally speaking my language my friend and I couldn’t have said it better ! Your insights are most intriguing and make alot of sense …and I love the questions u have , I share your thoughts 100 percent on those! As far as the coveralls actually being Sears tradewear…hmmmmmm… lol well I know for sure what they’re definitely not , they’re not big macs lol

Just out of curiosity, if everything lines up on the Tradewears why do you think they could be some other brand? I’ve just never understood this stance, so I’d love insight!

I said they line up pretty well, I didn’t say everything lined up to a tea(which is hard even with same brands anyway). but my thinking on it is unless we have a confirmation from someone just bc the sears matches good with them doesn’t mean it is them 100%. just like you can find plenty of big macs and montgomery wards that are pretty much identical(to each other, not the hero pair). Some pairs of sears Work n Leisures match up just same as tradewears. I’m not saying they are not the ones used I’m just not willing to say we know 100% that they are. Like I said in my post we most likely will never know for sure which is a shame really. What do you think? am I way off base here?

I don’t buy into this, I mean how many coveralls have a button enclosure and a square pocket flap that is stitched at the sides?
