Hey. I’m looking to buy the best version of the extended, tv edition, preferably one that has the May 1, 1964 title card included. Can anyone tell me if the 2001 Extended Edition DVD has this, or is there a better version I should buy? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
The only version of the TV edition that I personally know of that has the inserts you are looking for, is the Limited Edition VHS set. All of the DVD versions up to this point have just been the standard theatrical cut with the TV scenes spliced in.
However, I noticed that the new 4K collectors edition states “original broadcast version” of the TV cut will be included. Unfortunately we won’t know if it’s in fact the true NBC cut until it comes out next month.
For now though, this VHS set is and was the only release that I know of that had the actual NBC TV cut. This is my set and what it looks like for reference in case you want to find one of these and bust out the old VCR player:
And as you can see, it’s definitely the version you are looking for:
Hey thanks! I saw you reference this a few days ago, which got me thinking about it. I used to have that set, but have no idea what happened to it. Great set.
Yeah really. There is a rough looking version of an original recording of the NBC broadcast, commercials and all, but it’s rough quality to watch.
I would keep an eye on this “broadcast version” that will be on the new Collectors edition this October, it might just possibly be it. We shall see. I have those sets pre-ordered and can let you know once I get them if you want to hold off until we know for sure.
Yeah that’s the one. The only reason I think it might include the version you are looking for is because they are wording it as the “broadcast television cut”, and I have never seen it worded that way before. That particular feature is also being billed as “NEW”, so there is definitely hope that this will be the version you are looking for.
And yeah man I know, I have just about every version of this series from VHS to 4K, they get me hook line and sinker every time lol.
Indeed I hope it is, too. Thanks for the input. About the different releases, they usually get me with any new edition of the 1st 3 films, but the latter I usually have stronger resolve on not double dipping.
Boy, this brings me back. I helped bring this release out. Jay Douglas at Anchor Bay didn’t know there was a difference between this cut until I told him about it. I believe he reached out to NBC and got their master for this release. In subsequent releases by Anchor Bay it got messed up but this was the only true release here in the US. However, on Japanese laserdisc, I believe, there is a cut that uses that NBC release too. Oh, also in the 80’s, Media did put out the tv cut mistakingly on VHS and Beta…they mixed up the masters.
Thanks. I wonder why this DVD is so expensive then, since it’s incomplete. I was watching one on ebay, but I’ll forget about that one, and wait till the 4k gets here.
It’s just because it’s out of print and wasn’t as common as the regular releases. So people are just inflating the price like they do with everything these days.
Yeah I’m confident this new 4k release is going to have the complete and correct version. If not, that will be a bummer, considering they are billing it as “NEW”. Let’s hope.
It does? Interesting. Maybe it was changed and updated while that DVD was on the market? Hard to say but I have all of the U.S. releases, or at least most of them? I have the VHS standalone release, the limited edition orange tape set release, the standalone dvd, the dvd that comes in the set with the mini mask, and also the version in the limited shout Factory box set.
