Now I love this movie (was the first one I saw back in '85) for me it’s right behind the original with 9-out-of-10.
For those who don’t like the movie, would you have liked it better if the brother/sister thing had not been part of the story? or is there another reason why you don’t like H2?
It was also the 1st halloween movie I ever saw. Back to back H2&H3 on WGN back around the same year as you. I grew up with the idea so that never bothered me. I like H2 as much as I like H1. No problems here.
What I liked about it was that it was a direct continuation of H1 taking place right after Michael got up after falling on the lawn. The brother/sister angle didn’t bother me much because it didn’t take up much of the story. It was only toward the end where that connection was truly addressed. There was also definitely a lot more gore which felt like it was forced at times since there was so little of it in the first movie.
I also like Dick Warlock but felt he turned Michael’s walk into more of a robot or Frankenstein type walk. It is too bad they couldn’t have gotten Nick Castle back.
The final thing is the theme music sounded a bit too electronic like it was put through a synthesizer. I know it sounds like I have a lot of complaints, but I do really like the movie, and it is my favorite after the first one.
In the first Halloween Myers had been stabbed in the neck and the eye, shot 6 times, and then fell of a balcony. So I fell that he would be more stiff and sore as the night went on and that’s why I love DW’s version.
It’s also why The Myers mask is more dirty looking in H2. After wearing the mask all day and hiding in bushes, staking people from behind trees, and falling off the balcony… the mask is due to get some dirt on it and not stay as white as it was during the daytime.
I never understood how these fans never got this? It’s absolutely ridiculous to think he would have been stabbed in the neck and eye, shot 6 times, take a long fall from the balcony and just walk around like nothing happened. I loved how Dick Warlock had that slow, methodical pace.
I always figured Michael was pretty much a zombie in H2, explaining his walk. Not like a zombie that wants to eat your brains, but just an empty body, hellbent on finishing it’s job.
Like y’all said, the injuries he took in H1 would kill any normal human (I would think)
I love h2! Definitely my second favorite in line. If I’m not mistaken, Dick based his movements off the final scene in the first Halloween. He kinda just walked into the casting office, and put the mask on. Rick, the director was cool with it, then Deborah showed him that final scene from Halloween and asked him to move like that. What he took away was the slow mechanical rise from the ground, and that slow shuffle towards Laurie. More or less she gave him cliff notes, and went about her business. He never saw the original Halloween prior to making h2 as far as I know. Now as for why the mask looked like hell, improper storage and the streak n tips spray rubbing off on the mask, as well as the white wearing away and being around Deborah’s cigarette smoke for a few years point it in the direction we see on screen.
Never minded Dick Warlock, but the pacing of the movie itself is by far much slower than the first, and I’ll find myself nodding off watching it. The fact that the hospital setting does nothing for me for tone doesn’t help matters, either. I think that the movie would have been much more interesting had it continued with The Shape stalking Laurie through the suburbs, with many narrow misses between her and safety, and between Michael and getting caught. The numerous shots of Michael walking down a hallway get really old, really fast for me.
The brother/sister angle never really bothered me, but in retrospect, I do think that it held the series back in terms of potential. I feel like Michael is freer as a serial killer without being stuck to just chasing his sister. I think that The Shape as an idea, and an immovable, omnipresent entity, makes him a far more interesting killer than just him having bloodlust for his family. For me, Michael is Halloween personified. He represents a very instinctual part of Halloween: fear. One of my favorite parts of the first movie is the end where we get the B-roll montage with the breathing sound effect. It made it feel like The Shape could be in any of these places. He could be in your backyard, outside your window, or even in your closet. Something I liked about Halloween 2018 is that they specifically show him targeting random people. That his evil is chaotic in nature, uncontrollable and always hungry. He’ll go after this person, or that person, but without rhyme or reason. The sister angle takes that away. If he’s just after his sister, that means he’s not after you.
Halloween II is the only sequel I enjoy in the franchise. It’s not a very good movie overall but it’s a fun Halloween movie w/ some classic scenes. I too saw it on WGN back to back w/ Halloween III in the early to mid 80s. I remember recording both of them on Betamax. I had seen the original prior to watching the sequel and new instantly that the original was by far superior. The brother/sister angle was kind of a let down back then because I liked the way the Shape was presented in the original w/o motive. However, I got used to it and kind of understood they just needed something to push the story forward.
