H4/5 coveralls question

Ok gang sorry if anyone on here was bidding, but I just scored vintage Big Mac blue denim fisher stripe coveralls, my question is… What do I need to do to make them screen accurate for H4,5? Now they are vintage heavily worn, faded already, but as we know with denim they turn lighter over time. Any thoughts? BTW also have a pair of gray walls coming for H6, any thoughts on them? Will post pics after all “doctoring” is done. :tonqe: Still can’t find the correct Big Macs (h1), sears (h2) in my size YET!!! Lol

For your H4/H5, I personally recommend giving them a half hour bath in some Navy blue RIT dye… That should darken them up just enough for you! As for your H6 Walls they should be ready to go for the most part, maybe just throw in a little light weathering to give them that nasty worn look. And as far as finding Big Macs for H1 and your Sears H2 my best advice would be just keep checking Ebay, it’ll take some time to find them and if you get tired of searching I personally recommend picking up a pair of navy blue or charcoal grey your choice Reed brand coveralls they have the pocket flap on the breast pocket just like H1/H2… There basically the same coveralls as Red Kaps but they have the accurate pocket flap if your a stickler for details! I hope this helps you out on your Coverall quest my friend!

Cool thanks, where can I find the Rit dye?

You can pretty much find RIT at any craft/hobby store my friend… Michaels or AC Moore… I’ve also seen it at Wal-Mart too!

Deff ne sure to post some pics when you finish them all up, I love seeing Coveralls! I have about six pairs and I’m always keeping my eyes wide open for another set! So many aspects of the Myers costuming hobby are so addictive and I have to put coveralls right underneath masks in terms of collecting!

You can weather them with black spray paint to get the “navy” look. That’s all I did and this is what they look like:

Dren, that looks pretty good, will prob dye them in the navy, then use flat black spray paint to extra weather, and smudge in some oil stains if I can. Thanks for the input. Will be a while but will post some pics when done.

Matt I’ve often thought of using spray paint for weathering, but I was kinda scared it would stiffen up the material!? It looks like you didn’t have any issues though… Hmmmmm I think you’ve inspired me!

it does, at first. But with some wear, they loosen back up.

I posted this in the coveralls instruction thread, but I might as well post is here, too. As a guy that works with grease, oil, gas, grime, and gunk on almost a daily basis, the spots on my clothes that get the most contact with grime is the stomach, arm cuffs, knees, and back of the pants cuffs. I actually plan in wearing my pair of Red Kaps to work for a week just for the accurate stains. If you don’t have access to a mechanics shop, try buying some grease, oil, and gas and lightly sponging these onto the areas I mentioned on your coveralls. Remember not to overdo it, you don’t want to alter the color too much or even risk ruining the fabric. Wash the coveralls on heavy duty to get rid of the extra stuff, leaving the coveralls stained. I wouldn’t worry about doing the buttocks (though don’t forget the hole at the bottom of the right back pocket  ) or collar too much, in my experience these never get dirty unless you’re literally rolling around on the floor of the shop (which you usually aren’t). A lot of the mechanics I know spend a lot of time on their feet, so maybe consider wearing down the boots as well.

The pair pictured above is actually my second attempt. The pair before were done a lot lighter and I never went over them again because they ended up being too big anyway (I’d sell them to anyone interested, too). I’m not one of these guys who goes for hardcore accuracy with every little rip, tear, and weather mark. especially since the coveralls I prefer to use for H1 are spruce and not charcoal, like they should be. But the pair of H4’s above are only painted. I did miss a few areas and I’ve done zero scuffing on them, unfortunately.

Matt I used to be just the way you described, I literally would stress myself out… Color is normally the first thing that is questionable when it comes to H1 Coveralls, I personally just wear Navy blue Red Kaps… Added a little homemade weathering, I took them outside and basically just stood on top of them in the driveway and scooted them around, turned them over on the other side and repeated lol… Added some thinned out Brown and Black acrylic craft paint in a few spots and viola there’s my H1 Coveralls! Lol Personally I do see the spruce green color in the school scene and the bush scene… But the rest of the film they look Navy Blue due to Cudneys lighting… Most people normally just see navy blue, I’m talking about people who aren’t outside in there driveway scraping coveralls too… Ask someone you know who’s not into HalloweeN like all of us guys are and I almost guarantee they say his coveralls are navy blue lol… Although Charcoal makes a good choice as well the pair of Charcoal Reeds I have look almost Spruce green during the day and at night they look navy blue! I have had spruce before but idk they just never did it for me… Coverall colors basically come down to your personal opinion… Just like a mask does someone might see one mask as the best H1 but someone else might not… That’s why I always say go for what catches your fancy in this hobby…

I actually “misted” my olive green keys years ago with flat black, looks pretty good in most light situations, yeah fabric was little stiffer, but over time loosened up, especially since it was misted on from a distance. Will prob remove the pocket zippers on the H6 walls to be more accurate, maybe little dark weathering not much though. Now on the H1,2s when I find them, making note here…olive green1/ spruce green2. Will leave them as they come when I find them  Will dye, then black mist stains on my H4/5s when they come in. Anything else I should do, if I were in a hurry I would get reeds or red kaps for 1,2, but think I will hold out for the real deal. How many people on here would be pissed if I took original sears h2 coveralls and ruined them with detail work? :drinkers:
