H4 Book Cover Observation

The famous H4 book cover pic…
A few years ago I asked Kim Rebecca Gottlieb-Walker, the official Still photographer for H1/2 if she had taken this photo and she had no memory of it. The pic has often been used many times as reference as to being a worn shot with Castle underneath. Another reliable source states it’s actually lying on a stack of books during H1. Recently another reliable source was told by Universal that it was actually a shot of Warlock under the mask.
I believe it’s the latter…

First of all, the Cover mask has a slit/tear/fold over at the corner of it’s eye. This tear had appeared during the filming of H2 and wasn’t there during H1.

The H2 look has oval eyes and with Castle under the mask, the eyes are more round.

Like some had stated, the mask is lying down. I find that hard to believe. If you’ve ever seen an actually kirk lying flat, it stretches out way more than the cover mask.
I decided to use every editing process/trick in the book to enhance certain features of the cover mask.

Cropped the mask out of the cover and tried many filters and enhancing tricks. The left area on the neck on THE ACTUAL BOOK COVER is improperly cropped. After enhancing it, I noticed the left side isn’t that flared out so I erased and fixed that area.
Some say eyes were faintly added but when enhanced you can clearly see a proper set of eyes. Cleaned up the noise and fuzziness in the eyes.

The neck shape may look odd to some in my edited pic but the actual kirk mask’s neck is trimmed in a tilted way. The actual kirk sculp had tilted during sculpting and wasn’t fixed. The eye placements fairly match that of Warlock’s in H2.

Unless a proper shot of this mask surfaces, my verdict for now would be that it’s Warlock under the mask.

I can definitely see it now that you pointed it out K. Looking at the H4 book cover pic of the mask, I can easily see the shape of Warlock’s head matching this very closely, good observation!

Nice !

Wow K thats pretty impressive P.I. work there Boss  Always cool to see threads like this, not only for the info but to reassure the fact that we have an army of people that are still fascinated with anything related to the hero mask. :drinkers:

Excellent and informative read, great stuff :sunglasses:

I bet the man himself could tell us K. I would like to think he would know what pics of him in the mask there are

Good eye K man!

Good investigation. I actually forgot about that close up pic of the left eye and didn’t realize there was no corner tear.

Most awesome post. The mysteries surrounding these films continues to grow!!! Hopefully we will find the answers soon!

Love theses threads, K.

Very interesting kaizu. Great study!!

Now these are my type of threads.

Never noticed the corner tear before, really great stuff Kaizu :drinkers:

Very nice observation, well done.

Just at a glance it seems pretty obvious the mask is from H2. The matted hair, the dirt masks on the right hand side of the forehead and the shape.

It’s Warlock.
Thanks to Justin Mabry for the image on the left. It’s not the cover image, but it appears to be from the same photo shoot as the shape of the mask, lighting, etc. is nearly identical. This only adds additional support to what Kaizu already had pegged from go. :drinkers:

Honestly, never would have thought it, but those two pics seem pretty close. :drinkers: Would love to see the one clarified and blown up side by side to the cover. :drinkers:

Wow. To be honest, I would have never thought it was Warlock in the mask. The proper left ear is too curled in for a head to be in the mask… or so I thought. I still had doubts when reading through this thread, but that picture Frankie posted has me sold. Amazing find, Kaizu! Just goes to show how drastically different the mask could look on Warlock’s head. Crazy!

i’d like to know why apparently NO ONE has this original pic in its unedited form. I got a private email from someone saying he had seen the original in its unedited form, :open_mouth: and it was lying on a table or the floor…there was no one inside it…he also told me dennis beckstrom (sic) has the original pic and emailed him about…no reply  …i love a mystery- lol

My guess is that all through the film, and in most behind-the-scenes pics, Dick has the mask velcroed at the back of the neck giving the mask a much more horizontal stretch. Then, presumably after a take, Dick unstrapped the back of the mask (hence the flared neck and less stretched face) and the shot Frankie posted and the cover photo were taken. Thoughts?
