What question?

If you look closely at the back of the mask in the POV scenes, it looks like the mask was not slit in the back, but cut at an angle. And it also looks like there is padding in the sides of the neck, which would explain the neck flare.

What would be really great is if I could finally get an answer to the neck/slit question…

Oh right I know what you mean. Maybe they tried to make it looser on his head because of the broken nose?
Its easier to see on the behind the scenes footage, where he’s in the water.

You mean photos of the back of the mask?
I know the mask was fairly thin, but that wouldn’t make the neck flare out like it did.

Yeh, there’s shots of them taping the mask on at back.

Great thread. It’s always nice to see some love for the H5 and there’s a lot of info here I never knew
So does anyone have pictures from the movie of the mask with and without the added appliances? I’ve never noticed it looking different in the film myself but I was never looking for it either.

Does the mask have it in these pictures? The second one looks like a maybe, it’s blended really well, if so. I’m trying to find any obvious lines like on the SSN Shanks and I can’t find any.
Thanks to Auzorann for his awesome screencaps.

I’m unsure of the first one, since the mask isn’t being worn, but the second picture definitely has the appliance

Yeh, both those have the appliance, without a doubt.
On the SSN Shanks, the appliance is very obvious, in fact they made it too obvious for me… There’s a huge bloody ridge all the way round the nose…
Richard Vandark
Not 100 percent sure, but going off memory I think the scene in the barn does not have the appliance, shape mask was same as the horny guys mask spits.

This always really bothered me on the ssn. Like KNB couldn’t handle applying a latex prosthetic.

It’s just the way SSN did it, they said they wanted it to be noticeable. The appliance in the movie was almost invisible.

Picture #11 in the gallery is sans appliance (pretty sure I found the mask in the Myers mansion segment in the film on the NSM blu-ray as well), pictures #4 and 10 look like the appliance is removed from the mask, hence the nose discoloration.
I just got done doing a ton of screencaps of part 5 trying to figure out which mask is which. The big difference is the lips, they are closer to the nose with the appliance, as well as taller and sharper looking. From what I could tell the Myers house/mansion segment has all or most of the instances of the mask sans appliance in the film, and they are all brief. The left eye on the mask in the applaince-less scenes is a bit more oval than the more angular left eye cut on the mask used for the SSN Shanks (noticed the left eye more as the right is usually in shadows.

Thanks, yes I can see the difference now. Without the appliance the nose kind of looks like Michel Jackson’s.

That explains why it’s missing in those later pictures.
