Hair Color on Screen Used H1 Mask Question

Howdy and greetings everyone, this is actually my first post on this site!

My question is this: What did they, the crew of Halloween (1978), do to the hair of the masks used in the movie to give it the color it appears to have?

In so many pictures I see of the “Hero” mask, as I hear it being called, it seems to have what looks like big bushy matted brown hair. And we all know that this very mask was a conversion from the Don Post Kirk mask, although didn’t the Kirk masks originally have blondish hair? William Shatner in real life had kind of a dirty blond hair, so this would make sense. What we always hear about from people that were involved with Halloween is that they cut the eye holes bigger, ripped the sideburns off along with the hair from the eyebrows, “poofed up the hair,” and spray painted it white. What we don’t hear about is what they did to the hair color, if anything at all.

I’ve heard theories of the hair being painted with a little bit of black, which would make some sense for it to have a brownish tint afterwards in addition to the already tannish hue, although a lot of the time the hair looks just straight up brown. Was it also or only painted brown? I really don’t know what to make of this and was wondering if there was an actual sourced answer to my question.

I know that lighting can even have a drastic impact on color appearances too. The same thing happened to the color appearance of Michael’s coveralls throughout the movie (THANKS, Dean Cundey, for making our hobby so much more difficult… wink wink)

One thing I’ll add too is that the mask in Halloween II appears to have a lighter color hair. It is widely believed that the mask used in Halloween II is the same mask used in the first movie, which I trust and crew members of the movies have stated this was true as well, so this leads me to believe something was done during the production of the first movie to the mask’s hair and that over the years since, the mask just aged, not even to mention the horrible conditions the mask was kept in throughout that time, so I understand based on hearsay…

Thanks for any input and help!

Welcome to the board  The hair of the screen used Michael Myers mask is originally blonde that was Misted black. Both masks in Halloween 1 and 2 are the same. The only reason why the mask in Halloween 2 looks worn out is coz Deborah Hill kept it under her bed as said in the Halloween Documentary

Thanks man! This is a good place to be, that’s for certain.

So you say “misted” black, meaning like spray paint or what?

Welcome. Yes it was heavily sprayed black with spray paint in front but that just stays on top so when hair is moved it quickly becomes salt n peppa. After the heavy black paint rubbed out it was still stained a darker color.

You’re very welcome Mr. Dak and yes it was spray painted to create that mist

It is still unclear who made the “hero” mask. Bill Malone of Don Post Studios did up a few “white-faced Kirk masks” for the film, and kept one for himself. These masks had sideburns with the eye holes enlarged. Malone might very well have used a brown hair fiber on these masks, which could explain the hero mask’s hair appearing brown throughout the film.

i believe in blonde and black misted!
hmm what comes out is nothing like real brown … maybe the makeup from the neck and hand painted too the hair by crapping the mask … also i believe in the magic of the color on screen! what we saw in the movie is not was it was behind the scene … like the coveralls color…

The mystique of the mask is what keeps me coming back for more. We’ll never know for certain but it’s fun to speculate.

I know it’s an old thread, but they were blonde misted black
