Hair used on the 1978 hero/kirk,mohair or crepe?

I know nobody probably has any definitive answer of what exactly was used, but what is the closet in most people’s eyes? Has anyone blended mohair with crepe hair and got any good results? Just kinda curious on the whole ordeal. I’ve also heard yak hair being used but never seen any examples of yak hair.

It’s not yak, closest right now is goat mohair. Be careful though, some mohair is too soft.

James has a crepe/mohair blend that he posted a while ago that looks awesome, but the picture is blurred now because of photo bucket.

Here’s a few different fibers I’m not ready to name yet until further research is done, but I’ve got 2 hair samples from notable kirks, A lock of Quasi hair, and a full haired chewie. Some photos:

I always heard that it was the same hair used on the Don Post Chewbacca masks. I recall one member had theirs tested and it came out to be young yak belly hair or something like that.

It is, at least on chewies with black latex (will take more photos soon):

That was josh who said he had his tested and it came back as yak belly hair. All of the hair samples I have don’t match, though.

Thanks for the info and pics! I was thinking of buying some mohair ,I’ve used crepe before and it’s really nice but I want something alittle more authentic and harder to obtain, the only mohair I can find is pretty expensive on eBay,lots of color varietys, and don’t get much for the price, but I might try out a sample soon and test it with mixing crepe into it.

No problem! Crepe is a bit too dull/coarse for my taste. Some of the mohair you’ll be wanting to look for is that expensive. Expensive doesn’t always = good, but in some cases like this one it does. If ya want the good stuff it costs haha!

Definitely!! I’ll have to bite the bullet and sample a few colors of mohair then I guess and find one I like.thanks again

That Josh is a lying bastard.

To clarify I didn’t mean to imply you were lying! Just that the fibers I had didn’t look close to yak belly. That being said though, it always looked like the hair on your kirk was courser than the usual DPS 70s hair. What was the hair like when you had it, do you recall?

We did have hair tested and it did come back as yak hair. Also know that they used crepe wool and Scottish blackface sheep hair. But hey, what do I know.

Should be more careful with my words, my apologies. Your copy may have had yak hair, but in terms of what can be bought today no yak I’ve found is close to any of the 3 samples I had. Maybe I could have the 2 kirk samples I have looked at, who knows. At this point I’ve heard just about everything in terms of what was used for the originals- crepe, yak, now sheep, angora goat hair, etc. the list just continues to grow

Belly hair from a female yak.

The stuff Nik sells is the closest I’ve seen and it’s ash blonde mohair. It’s certainly not the average mohair. It has a very soft yet strong quality to it. I found a source on ebay a while ago.

These are from Nestia shop on ebay(only mohair supplier I can find ,they have about 70 different listings for mohair in a variety of colors,it’s not much hair for what you pay but, looks to be very good quality. Not sure what color to get so I may get samples of a few colors and see how good they look in person and see if the hair is durable. They have a decent bit of different blonde colors and its a bit hard choosing one that is close seeing as some original Kirk’s have slightly different color hair from what I’ve seen. Leaning towards this Auburn/ashy color they sell. Just some info incase anyone else wants to look into it!

Yak belly hair would be way too fine. That stuff is like spiderweb thin.

Baby mohair is too fine and wavy. I’ve yet to acquire and try out adult mohair.

Scottish blackface sounds far more credible.

It has to be a reasonably coarse hair otherwise you won’t get the wiry halo in silhouette shots.
It also needs to have a bit of lustre for that shiny Kirk hair look. Perhaps there is a mix to enhance the blackface.

I had settled on Lincoln wool for my projects, because it was long and lustrous but it felt a touch too coarse too. Blackface looks like its a little finer and shorter.

Also been looking at mohair wool, has a bit of a different look then the regular mohair. Looks to come rolled up (like a spool) and unwinds into a long strip.but also looks a bit fine, would have to handle it in person to know for sure but the strands look to be longer and not short(think it would be hard to glue short stranded hair without alot falling out, unless it was sprayed with something to keep it together) this is Definitely an interesting topic for me. Never may know for sure but it’s fun trying to come close.

You can get the ash blonde mohair in bulk here. I think Nik sells it cheaper though.

Thanks! I’ll definitely try that first and by Nik you mean nag masks Nik right? Didn’t know he sold hair.

Those are black face Scottish sheep right? I tried eBay for some of that hair type and didn’t find much but sparse wool, but I’ll look around online for more info on that. Definitely interested in trying out a few different hairs, maybe even mixing some? And if I try an h2 look, to get that matted grungy look, mixing hairs might be good for that but I still have to experiment with it.
