Since we obsess over every other detail of the movies… I posted this on the FB site, so I thought I’d share it here as well. A user there was questioning the curved Es in the opening credits, which don’t appear to match the Es in the typeface ITC Serif Gothic, the typeface used in the opening sequence and on the poster. The reason for that is the original ITC Serif Gothic, designed by Herb Lubalin in 1972, featured alternate characters like the curved C, but those alternate characters have never been digitized for the modern font’s character set for some reason. The opening credits used the alternate characters, however the posters did not, instead they used the standard E. Considering the prominence of this use of the typeface’s alternate characters and the current popularity of 70s and early 80s typography, it would be worth petitioning ITC, the owner of Serif Gothic, to add the alternate characters. In the meantime you can create your own curved Es by using the C as a starting point.
