Halloween 1978 Virtual Reality experience

This title is not click bait.

(Pictures below).

I am a programmer whose current employment is in program development. As of right now, I have started a project which I have wanted to do for a very long time now.

Making a ‘Halloween’ game has always been a goal but has never felt realistic. I think a game where a character is running away endlessly from a Michael Myers character is pretty boring if I’m honest. I’ve commented on this site before about how amazing it would be if a studio were to recreate the street of Haddonfield where Halloween took place - and recreate all the houses, the cars, the street, the lighting, and have characters set up at certain locations around this set that replicate iconic moments from the film, like Michael standing outside the Wallace’s house, or Michael with the bed sheet standing in the bedroom in front of Lynda. You would be able to pay and visit this studio and be inside Haddonfield Illinois the year 1978 on Halloween! You’d be able to walk freely around, into any house, and see still characters replicating iconic moments. Well, I think this is the idea for what I have planned.

As it stands right now, that’s the idea I’m working towards. To create a virtual environment that would identical to the the set of Halloween 1978. It would be a free world environment where you could walk anywhere you like and encounter scenes from the film. This would be played on a PC / Laptop and you would also be able to experience this in VR too.

My question to all of you is what cool things can you think of? Part of me wants to recreate the entire film from start to finish, where you would be able to walk around and explore parts of the scenes to get different points of views, for example; after Michael kills bob, you could be downstairs in the kitchen and watch the process of Myers getting the bed sheet ready and walking upstairs to kill Lynda. This would be a really intense work load for me to actually recreate the entire film in a game, and would most likely take me a very long time to achieve.

For now, my only plan is to create the street of Haddonfield where Tommy and Lyndsey live. You will get the Myers house, the Wallace’s house and the Doyle house. You will walk freely in this world and will see very cool moments from the film. So walking into the Wallace’s house and upstairs, you will see a distressed Laurie in the corner with Michael Myers appearing from the shadow of the doorway. An even better idea I thought would be to have these scenes refreshed, so you might see the scene I’ve just described to you, but once you walk away, the scene (or should I say characters) are gone, and you have to walk around Haddonfield to find where the next scene is played out.

Any ideas? This will take time. But your ideas will be listened to and seriously considered. I really want to avoid a mission based game. Missions often require extra story which means adding story the original. I wouldn’t mind this, but I think Halloween 1978 is perfect as is and shouldn’t be added to. Also makes this a generic horror game but just with Michael Myers skins.

I’ll add some photos of the progress I’ve made as of yet. I’m building the architecture for the Myers house, the Doyle house and the Wallace house. The architectures will be EXTREMELY detailed! I’m a mega fan of the 78 film and the details matter. I’ll be rewatching the film frame for frame and adding in as much detail as possible. If there’s a crisp packet or an empty beer bottle in the kitchen of the Wallace’s, then you can bet it will be added into the game.
I’ve also been looking at recent photos on the internet of the actual houses interiors used for filming on Halloween. The interiors have been changed slightly, but it helps to give me a picture of the full interior design of these houses that we never got to see in the film. You would be able to see the full interior of these houses and what it used to look like in 1978 in the game. The mask is also going to be exciting to see in action. I made a 3D scan of a nag 75k that I own and have got it processed on my computer as a 3D model. All I need to do is add it to a body, it will look extremely accurate, especially once I start playing with lighting in the game environment. All is shown in the photos attached.

Hope this sounds exciting and please drop down any ideas you think you’d like to see!

I think it’s a good idea. Any way to include
the station wagon into the game or would that be going a little too far?

I mean to make it drivable around Haddonfield

Oh absolutely! Would very easy to do. Just download a 3D model of a station wagon and then customise the skin to that of the car from the film. There are now super close up shots of the actual car since it was recently discovered again so this would make the job of adding a skin to the model super easy.

Can definitely do that. I want this to be free world open game so I guess driving could make sense. Driving the station wagon would be a nice Easter egg. Maybe as a way of convenience for the player to travel down the street? Sure.

Very cool! Good luck with this & please keep us posted with the progress

There is a interview from 1977 on the set of Halloween at the Myers house that finally shows the back of the Myers house although blurry still great reference

This sounds like a really cool project, very excited to see where it goes!

This sounds awesome!

I’ve been wanting a Halloween game for the longest time, and if a big studio isn’t gonna do it then this would be great. Definitely will check back on this later.

Great idea! Sounds like this would be alot of fun. And being in Haddonfield in VR would be a trip! Would this include music and soundbites from the film?

Thanks! I’ve seen this interview before, never remembered seeing that view of the house though. Good shout

Absolutely. Experiencing Haddonfield in VR is going to be an amazing experience.

This will include the tracks and soundbites exclusively from the film. This will not include anything from the motion picture soundtrack. Something about the sound of what’s in the film that is so special.

I’m working on extracting those sounds very carefully from the movie without any external noises.

Some new updates on the Myers house. Exterior design not finished but hopefully will be finished by the end of this week. Then will start working on the interior, which I’m most excited for as there will be so many things to add!

Will keep this post updated! Thanks for checking in

Sweet! This is such a cool concept. I agree, there is nothing like the music from the actual film. Looking forward to this!

The house is no where near finished. I just wanted to show this basic draft that I have and what it looks like in the game world playing with some lighting. This is only a draft so looks very bland right now. So much more detail to add.

Here are some drawings i made in google slides of the Myers house based on real photos, i tried to make it as accurate as possible with the side of the windows and siding.
